About this listen

It's rule-breaker Emily Foster's birthday, and like everyone at The Jungle Room, she just wants to get some action. Unfortunately she stumbles on the wrong kind, witnessing a mob hit. To protect her, she's entered into the Witness Protection Program with by-the-book Special Agent Jake Ward as her chaperone.

When the location of their safe house is compromised, Jake stashes Emily deep in the Texas backwoods. The city-girl might be safe from the Mafia, but she has to contend with a psychotic rooster, a narcoleptic dog, crazy cowboys, and the danger of losing her heart to the one man she can't have.

Jake's as hot as he is infuriating, and she can't help but push all his buttons to loosen him up. Their mutual, sizzling sexual attraction poses a dilemma: Jake's determined to keep her safe and out of the wrong hands; she's determined to get into the right ones - his.

The hero man handled the heroine, consent was not clear in some situations. Controlling alpha douche all in the guise of “protecting” her. I had high hopes for the story, but it fell flat.

High hopes

Kept me interested from page 1 right through the epilogue. And six more words because Amazon needs more BS.

Great story... great characters.

This was okay...The first and last hour were the best. The in between just seemed to drag on...There was not enough happening to hold my attention fully.

First and last hour are the best

There was a lot of funny dialogue but the heroine allowing the continued verbal abuse by hero without calling it out and blaming herself became frustrating. I enjoy good verbal barbs when they are clever and equal. But constantly calling someone stupid without remorse is abuse.

Frustrating

I liked the story but personally would have told the main character, Jake to get over himself. Yes, I know he's protecting her. But, he's too controlling and speaks to Emily really rude and disrespectful. I really just wanted a scene were she gets her say and tells him, "look dude, you said this and you didn't say this...!" This book was writing in the view of a man. lol

Good story line with great characters.

The female lead is infuriatingly hot-headed, immature and so antagonistic. Pair that with a male lead who has some anger and control issues and lashes out in the name of trying to protect an uncooperative victim. The romance aspect just seemed like the foundation for a toxic relationship with juvenile jibes and manipulation from her side and constant man handling from his side. On the one hand, the woman took too stupid to live to a whole other level with her selfish and reckless actions. On the other hand, there was so much questionable dialogue around consent eg "what if I don't want to" "I know you want to but you're just being difficult". And iffy dialogue around the way a woman is supposed to behave, like she was supposed to magically be a perfect southern belle. Overall, I found many parts of the story entertaining and enjoyed life on ranch and all the supporting characters who were well developed. But the frustrating interactions between the h and H could have been toned down a whole lot.

Immature female lead/ angry male lead

I give the book a 4.5.. The narrator did a good job in my opinion. The book deals with losing and gaining family and love. The book was fun, with a lot of secondary characters that are interesting.

The heroine was a bit of a mess.
She was loving, insecure, fun and careless. Some times you would want to hug her and at other times you would want to throtel her. I would recommend if you are looking for a book if you are not looking for a perfect heroine. The heroine is loved in spite of her issues.

Fun book; but the heroine is an aquired taste.

Great story gave me all the feels. I know a book is great when I feel what the heroine is feeling or I’m embarrassed by their actions! Kept me laughing and has a great set of character!! And last but not least who doesn’t love an ALPHA MALE!!!

Loved it!!

Wayyyy too much with the heroine's attitude and hero's responses---went over the "believability" line for me . Most men would not tolerate her jumping to unreasonable conclusions and reactions much less fall in love with her. And women should NEVER tolerate the abusive name calling and lack of anger management much less fall in love with him. Made them both seem very unstable and immature and in need of some intense counseling! Having said that, the story line had enough excitement to keep you listening--even if just to see if Emily or Jake evolved or matured enough to handle life and love.

Narrator was very good and distinguished between characters very well.

OTT hero/heroine
