Publisher's summary

A high school ruled by small-town politics.
A rural community ruled by rumors.
The truth may set them free. But are they ready for it?

The residents of West Lake are resistant to change and afraid of confrontation. They’re happy to punch in and punch out and complain about the boss man. They’re friendly to your face but spiteful behind your back. They have their farms and their football, but, underneath that small-town veneer, there’s envy and self-hatred and greed.

Principal Janet Wilcox is a modern-day Machiavelli of small-town politics, playing the school board and the community like a banjo. Coach Rick Barnett finds himself squarely in her sights when an up-and-coming quarterback challenges her son’s starting position.

Gwen Townsend’s the new teacher in town. She’s a beautiful woman with a secret. She picked the wrong place to hide from her past. Caleb Miles is her star pupil, a brilliant young writer, questioning his sexuality in a town lacking tolerance. Gwen needs to hide who she was, and Caleb needs to hide who he is.

In a town run on rumors, nobody’s secret is safe.

Absorbing Contemporary Fiction

This audiobook captured my attention throughout the story. Phil M. Williams is an amazing writer and when I start one of his audiobooks, I have a hard time stopping until the end of the story, and this audiobook was no different. When the story opened, it brought to mind that old song titled, "Harper Valley PTA", written by Tom T. Hall and sung by Jeannie C. Riley, but the tale does morph into more as it unfolded. I recommend this novel to others who enjoy contemporary fiction at its finest. Tristan Wright's and Sarah Grace Wright's narrations were emotive and added to the entertainment of the story. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Interesting read

This book kept me decently interested throughout. It is one of the few books that grab your attention early on, which I alway appreciate. The ending wasn’t super satisfying, but overall...I don’t regret the purchase

Another great book from Phil M. Williams

Another great book from Phil M. Williams who is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. The characters were so realistic, as they are in all of his books, that I became invested in them and truly cared what happened to them. I really like that his audio books have both male and female narration, which makes the characters even more realistic. Events in the story correlated with human behavior in the world today making for a very thought provoking listen/read. Another book by Phil M. Williams I didn't want to end. I can't wait to listen to / read more of his work.

Small town rumors.

Another 5 star plus story from Phil M. Williams. A very real feeling, true to life novel. Rumors harm. Power. Greed. Bullying. Lies. Blackmail. Suicide. Child neglect. Small town gossip. All with two teachers trying to do what is best for the children. With many, many complications. It is a lengthy book, but I still didn't want it to end.
An amazingly entertaining listen! The narration of this book is spot on. Lots of characters. Lots of voices.

Loved this

I loved that this book drew me in right from the beginning. I wanted to know what was going to happen over and over and had a very hard time turning it off. I recommend this to everyone and I’m definitely listening to or reading more of Phil’s books
