Publisher's summary

There’s a thin line between justice and vengeance. James and Brittany fight for both against a corrupt police department.

James Fisher taught his students to question authority, much to the chagrin of his principal. He loved his wife, but his marriage was failing. His life was a bubble in search of a pin.

After his bubble burst, he moved to a backwoods town, content to waste away. He was awakened from his apathy by a small girl with a big problem. It was safer to look the other way. Getting involved would place James squarely in the crosshairs of the local police.

He was afraid, but he did it anyway.

Not what I expected, in a very good way!

Cesspool is one of many books where I’ve assumed based on the author’s prior works that I knew what the story was. I guess reading the description would solve this unsubstantiated assumption problem of mine. Cesspool is not only a surprise in where the story took me, but in the main character as well. James Fisher comes off as a mild unassuming nerd who is not in the least physically inclined. Without saying much more about James so that I don’t provide any spoilers, this book proved to me that Phil M Williams can not only write some very interesting political based thrillers, but he can also turn a human-interest character study into a full-blown thriller as well. This review is based on listening to the audiobook version of Cesspool where I was once again treated to multiple narrators, the author himself and Sarah Grace Williams. I have to say this was an excellent partnership in their ability to brig each character to life and give the story the treatment it deserved.

Cesspool

This is an exciting story with great characters to pull for. It had me on the edge of my seat so many times. James, the main character, fights against a corrupt police department and manages to turn the tables on them time and again. Another exciting Phil M. Williams novel.

You need to finished the book to know the ending

I had a hard time to stop listening to this book because the story had me hooked very early on.
After having listened to two of his previous books " Stone Lake" and "No Conscience" which I both liked this third book has been my favorite.
Phil Williams tends to show the ugly and bad in people but then contrast it with the good and caring in others. It easy to picture the characters and some of the situations that arise.
The escape through the two-foot drainage pipe 80 feet long seems a bit hard to believe when she had to let James get past her to been able to open the hatch. After finishing the audio book I actual went back to the Kindle version and reread that chapter. All by all I highly recommend this book.
Keep it up Phil.

Great read!

I love how Phil Williams has no fear of speaking the negative truths that most people aren't aware of, or choose to ignore. This book is full of suspense and one that is hard to put down!

Protecting One's Friends

Phil M Williams has written a very deep and thought-provoking novel about just how far one will go to protect one's friends. James Fisher was a temperate man. When he discovered that his neighbor was abusing a young runaway, James had to decide to either ignore the situation or do something about it. The author has written a very convoluted and tangled story that stays with the reader long after the story has ended. I recommend this story to others who enjoy this genre with the understanding that there are some mature themes described in the prose. Phil M Williams' and Sarah Grace Wright's dual narrations were great and added to the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.

Okay, I'm hooked!

First The Predator Hunter and now Cesspool. It's safe to say that author Phil M Williams is a major writing talent. Narration is also outstanding. Thanks again, Shelley.

They were afraid, but they did it anyway.

"They were afraid, but they did it anyway."
A fantastic listen. It says it is narrated by the author and Grace Wright. But I think it was Tristan and Grace Wright. Whoever, it was done to perfection. I am sure they added to my enjoyment of this fantastic book. All the feels were so real. So intense and heartfelt.
The story captured me from the sad start to the nerve racking end. A true edge of your seat thriller.
About half way through I wanted to write the author and scream at him for putting me through this. I just knew he was going to break my heart. It was in the middle of the night and I just kept extending my sleep timer another 30 minutes. Ugh. But it is that good.
If you don't mind grossest (?) and like to read about conquering bullies and corruption, one click this one.

So glad I finally found this author!

Cesspool is a wonderfully entertaining book. After listening to The Predator Hunter by Phil M. Williams I had to purchase his other two mystery/thriller books. I was not bowled over by his book What Happened at the Lake. But this book has me hooked from end to end!
The protagonist is James Fisher. He's a college instructor who doesn't always teach by the book. When he finds out his wife is having an affair he's lost, but only momentarily. His wife and her lover die in an accident. Now with money from the insurance he decides to move to the mountains bordering a very small town. He buys a cabin and thinks things aren't going to be so bad after all. Until he meets a 17 year old girl who lives with his neighbor. She's uneducated and lives with this older man as his servant/slave.
James has a foreboding feeling when he intervenes and allows the girl to stay with him. He doesn't realize his neighbor and the law are related. And surrounding them is a whole group of very supportive good old boys.
Narration by the author and Sarah Grace Wright is perfect.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Two thumbs up!

I listened to this book straight through! The story keeps you hooked in anticipation of what's going to happen next. It definitely took some turns I did not expect and keeps you guessing. I would recommend this one.
