About this listen

Seventeen years ago, Quinn McKinley left her small town of Kingsford for a shot at a happier life. Now a successful real estate agent in New York City, she's brought back on behalf of a client, begrudgingly accepting her return home in order to close the deal of a lifetime.

Coming back opens doors she's done her best to keep closed all these years, namely, how she felt about her childhood best friend, Sawyer Kent.

Sawyer's spent her whole life in Kingsford, working at her family's antique store and trying to make everyone happy. Quinn's return is unexpected, knocking her routine existence more than a little off balance. She's still frustrated at how Quinn left things between them, and even if she has all kinds of unresolved feelings, she's got bigger problems to worry about right now.

Contains mature themes.

Great listen!

Monica rights the best angsty novels and I’m here for the full ride! The narration is also great!

A Wonderful Romance

This is a perfect blend of romance and overcoming adversity. Great character development and narrative tone. The performance by Lori Prince was superb as always.

It’s okay

The whole book is about two characters who love each other but never get together until the last chapter… I would’ve rather read a book that had more to it than that.

Subverted my expectations.

Surprisingly didn't fall into a lot of expected tropes. It was less misunderstanding or lie driven and more down to earth and relatable. it was just two people who weren't ready yet, and that's fine. Also they didn't blame the person who left a bad situation like some books do. So I give it credit, it did things better than other books with a similar plot.

Addictive!

I can’t complain too much when I binge-listened the story in a week during my work day commutes and free evening hours : )

As some of the lower reviews implied - yes, there were parts of the story the bothered me (I’ll include those below with a spoiler alert),

However, I have absolutely no complaints overall. It was a fresh storyline I’ve never heard before with a solid ending.

SPOILER ALERT!!! (Don’t continue reading before you finish this awesome book)

- I did struggle with idea that Quinn was ready to give up on true love over Realtor Ethics…like chick just sell the house and then get back to bae!

- at the end, was Charles (I think that was his name) dating Sawyer’s “Danielle” aka Dani? That would have been an interesting twist!

- there’s a lot of internal dialogue that sometimes dragged along. I still listened though!

Again, great story that made me subscribe to Audible because apparently Spotify has audiobook limits. f those guys. But read / listen to this book for a fresh love story.

expect to cry

with the history these characters share, seriously crying is just what's going to be in your future. this love story is still beautiful, even if the characters have tragedy in their past.

A “Game of Chance” that actually pays off in a big way!

This romance is a game of chance where the stakes are high and the only thing needed to win, is to NOT bet against yourself! Fear of loss or rejection is a devise for romance novels because it promotes a lack of clear communication and frequent misunderstandings. Having said that, the layers of this story unfold slowly in a deliberate way, and there’s plenty of spice and cute kid moments to break things up. Once we get more of the big picture, it’s both heartwarming and tragic, but most of all, it’s redemptive. While the relationship in question often seems destined or fated, the catalyst that sets everything into motion seems a little random to connect all of the deep rooted parts of this story. What if that “thing” didn’t happen? Would these characters have drifted through life with only part of their hearts at the wheel?

Monica creates such beautiful stories and they are imbued with texture, light and meaningful connections. This story left me with a few unanswered questions but with a little imagination, I can always fill in those blanks. Overall, this is a powerful story of love and forgiveness!

Great story!

Much better than how I thought how the story would be.. great supporting characters and MCs… the angst past and present was good . One of the best Lori Prince reads I’ve come across.. excellent!!
