About this listen

Winter blizzards bring a flurry of cases to solve in this riveting new foxhunting mystery featuring “Sister” Jane Arnold and her incorrigible hounds from New York Times best-selling author Rita Mae Brown.

Frigid February air has settled into the bones of the Blue Ridge Mountains, making for a slow foxhunting season, though “Sister” Jane Arnold’s enthusiasm is not so easily deterred. With the winter chill come tweed coats, blazing fireplaces - and perhaps another to share the warmth with, as the bold hunting scarlets worn by the men in Sister Jane’s hunting club make the hearts of women flutter - until someone’s stops entirely.

Harry Dunbar, a member of the Jefferson Hunt club with a penchant for antique furniture, is found with his skull cracked at the bottom of the stairs to a local store. There are no telltale signs of foul play - save for the priceless (and stolen) Erté fox ring in his pocket. Sister and her hounds set out to uncover the truth: was this simply an accident - a case of bad luck - or something much more sinister?

Steeped in the deep traditions of Virginia horse country and featuring a colorful cast of characters both two- and four-legged, Scarlet Fever is another spirited mystery from Rita Mae Brown.

Rita Mae Brown is a writer - not a narrator

I honestly can't tell you if I liked the book. I'm sorry to say that Rita Mae Brown has ruined her own book. A narrator she is not. She stumbles and bumbles and there is no reason not to hire a professional! Her errors are so frequent as to through off the tempo of the book and I found myself listening for the errors, out of place pauses, stumbles, and not the story. You'll pass this one if you're smart. At least listen to the sample before purchasing.

Love Sister Jane

I'm hooked on the Sister Jane series, and wish Rita Mae Brown would add more to it. However, Ms. Brown might want to consider using someone else other than herself to do the narrating. While I'm a huge fan, she doesn't do her work justice by doing the reading.

Not up to par for the Sister Jane books.

The storyline was too predictable and there wasn't enough human interaction as much as there was hunting scenes. Hunting is the base of this series, but it should not be 3/4 of the book. It was depressing, frankly.

Rita Mae does it yet again.

Sister Jane and crew are some of my favorite characters in all of the fiction books I have read.

A little disappointing

I generally love the "Sister" books. This one however, I had trouble following it. I think it was because the narration was so monotone, I had trouble figuring out who was speaking, and how the story was unfolding. The normal verbal and tonal cues in good narration just weren't there this time. It was disappointing.

Typical Sister Jane

The book it’s self was a typical Sister Jane story. Good descriptions of the areas and the sport. Not the worst in the series, but not the best either. The really big problem was the narration. Rita Mae should really have someone else do her books. Her weird cadence and either very slow or way to fast reading made it very hard sometimes to just follow the flow of the story. I will not listen to another book she narrates again!!

Love Sister Jane but Narration Awful

I enjoy the Sister Jane books. However, Rita Mae writes well but she should have a professional do the performance. Her cadence was irregular and she really didn’t do her writing justice. It was an extremely distracting performance.

surely a dip in an otherwise great series

I made it to chapter 9 but really ... all of the political and social issue opinions, pointless chit chat between characters, and Fox Hunting 101 explanations do nothing to develop a good story. instead, these things are distracting and a dull. I hope we see another book in the Sister Jane series that gets back to exciting rides and grand who-dun-its.

What were you thinking?

I love this series but seriously, you're a writer, not a narrater. Listening to you read this was not a treat...not at all.
