About this listen
This pulse-pounding, brilliantly twisting new historical thriller is a gripping tale that will leave you questioning everything.
September 1943: Berlin is the heart of darkness—and the last place Dr. Elin Lund wishes to be. An expert in psychological profiling, she’s been summoned from Copenhagen to investigate the gruesome murders of eight young women. Even in the midst of unspeakable evil, these killings stand apart. And with her homeland now under Nazi occupation and a young son to protect, Elin can’t refuse such a request.
Homicide Detective Kurt Schneider, head of the criminal police unit, is grudging in his welcome. The orders to find the killer come from the top, and to fail means death. The stakes are too high to risk any mistakes—or to trust a stranger. Yet the pair, trapped in an uneasy partnership, each has expertise the other needs. And Schneider, like Elin, is clearly guarding secrets of his own.
Racing to complete the investigation and return to her son, Elin feels the net tightening. Every sliver of evidence reveals a killer infinitely more dangerous, and more powerful, than anyone suspected. And in drawing closer to the terrifying truth, Elin has unwittingly made herself his new obsession…
A serial killer on the loose. A profiler with a hidden past. Trust is a luxury no one can afford.

Story
It’s not that Micayla Lange is afraid of the clinking she hears coming from the first floor of the empty McMansion she’s housesitting for her uncle Nicco. She’s a cop, after all. It’s just that finding out her boyfriend was cheating on her was enough drama for one night. Now she’s alone on New Year’s Eve, wearing flannel pajamas and wielding a Glock 22 as she zeroes in on the unmistakable source of the sound: Uncle Nicco’s private office.

One of the Best!
Dynamic characters, keeps you on edge, the end was a bit sappy but I loved the narrator so much it hardly mattered. Definitely worth the money.

A Roller Coaster Of Intoxicating Suspense
THE BOOK:
What a story board! Impossible to put down, Riveting and totally plausible, Twists and turns that engage, shock, jar and entertain. Rivals Robards’ The Black Swan Of Paris
THE READER: incredible accomplishment with divers accents. Makes the story come alive, and you a part of it. Bravo!

Excellent narrator
The story was a slow burn. Kept waiting for something big to happen but it did keep me listening. The narrator’s Germany accent brought life to the story and the time period.

I loved this book. It was like I was right there.
Great storytelling in vivid detail. It shows there can be a sliver of hope during the most devastating of times.

Great idea for a book, came up a little short
I am an avid murder mystery & WW2 non-fiction reader so these two ideas coming together in a single book was my dream come true. I wish there would have been a bigger twist than we were given. I would have followed this story another 24 hours if need be. It will make a great movie…
