About this listen

Sara Paretsky follows her instant New York Times best seller Fallout - her most widely read novel in years - with an extraordinary adventure that pits her acclaimed detective, V.I. Warshawski, against some of today’s most powerful figures.

Legendary sleuth V.I. Warshawski returns to the Windy City to save an old friend’s nephew from a murder arrest. The case involves a stolen artifact that could implicate a shadowy network of international criminals. As V.I. investigates, the detective soon finds herself tangling with the Russian mob, ISIS backers, and a shady network of stock scams and stolen art that stretches from Chicago to the East Indies and the Middle East. In Shell Game, nothing and no one are what they seem, except for the detective herself, who loses sleep, money, and blood, but remains indomitable in her quest for justice.

Sara Paretsky and Susan Erickson!

Bottom line: Great story, great narration. V.I. is a force to reckon with! Recommend the series!

So Improbable, It Was Fun To Read

While the story line is not likely, Paretsky makes one believe...and care...and keep reading. V I Warshawski is a heroine for the common woman. Another hit for her and the author.

Great

This is one of her finest adventures. The narrator is also great. She’s my favorite author.

Disappointing

I have liked the Warshawski novels in the past, but was really disappointed she had to inject her personal political slant to her writing in this one. If I wanted political commentary I would not have picked a fiction book. I did decide to finish the book, and was not impressed with the story and the convoluted plot either. Ms. Paretsky has lost the humor and V. I. is not a pleasant person in her last few books. I'm done with her.

V.I. Officially jumps the shark

It seems to me that Sara Paretsky is beginning to rewrite the same plot line over and over.
Stop me if you’ve heard this ... V.I. gets some case via an unknown family member, she gets in over her head, gets shot at, or gets the crap beaten out of her, spends time in the hospital, makes a miraculous recovery, and solves the case.

Memo to Sara Paretsky ... enough of the psycho, dog-hating woman in 2B. Her character is annoying, and adds nothing to the storyline.
Also, it’s time to write-out Jake.

I was on the edge of my seat!

I can never wait for VI books to release. Words cannot say how much I liked this book. There was action, stupid ex- husband, and issues straight from the headlines. V.I. is a bad mamma jamma. I'm so glad she finally took Dick down a bit and has another love interest.

Intriguing

Good plot. Sometimes too much repetition of explanations of what has happened. like style of ending.

again this is the WRONG voice for V I.

Wrong voice. too mechanical. didn't enjoy. story line roo absurd. has become too sarcastically argumentative in every scene.

Disappointing to Chicagoans

The story was good enough but the reader clearly knows nothing of Chicago. So many mispronounced places, street names etc. like nails on a blackboard to a Chicagoan. Surprising the author didn’t know or listen and edit the audio version.

Another success for Sara P

Great book. Love the narrator Susan as compared to Jean Smart who did at least one of the books in this series. I do like Jean as an actress though but I love the voice Susan does for Mr Contreras the most.
