About this listen

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“This may just be the single most important book on modern Evangelicalism in recent years. It is bold, clear, and very well-researched.”—John MacArthur

"Some will quibble over details, but no one should miss the powerful warning in this book. We face a gathering storm, as Winston Churchill warned a century ago, but this time the enemy is inside as well as outside the gates. Every convinced and unashamed Evangelical should read, ponder, and pray over this important book."—Os Guinness

How deeply have leftist billionaires infiltrated America’s churches?

In Shepherds for Sale, Megan Basham of the Daily Wire documents how progressive powerbrokers—from George Soros, to the founder of eBay, to former members of the Obama administration—set out to change the American church. Their goal: to co-opt evangelicals for political purposes. She exposes:

· The left-wing billionaires, foundations, and think tanks that deliberately target Christian media, universities, megachurches, nonprofits, and even entire denominations

· The celebrity megachurch pastor who secretly encouraged a group of pastors to change their views on sexuality

· The revered Presbyterian theologian who backed a congregation rebelling against his own denomination

These are just a glimpse into the compromises and astroturf campaigns Basham uncovers. Many evangelical leaders are pushing their members to “whisper” about sexual sins, reconsider the importance of abortion, lament the effects of climate change, and repent of “perpetuating systemic racism.” And in exchange for toeing a left-wing line, many of those church leaders and institutions have received cash, career jumps, prestige, and praise. Basham brings the receipts, and names names.

A rigorously reported exposé, Shepherds for Sale is a warning of what happens when the church trusts the world’s wisdom instead of Scripture.

Must Read for all Christians

There has been no shortage of online execration from “Big Eva” pointed at Basham for this book. As a Christian, I’m saddened but not surprised. After all, Jesus died for us because we’re not worthy to save ourselves. I’ve seen a great deal of unworthy behavior, which, to me, lends credence to this book.
Online drama aside, Basham has done a tremendous job of calling out those entrusted to shepherd believers; those who should know better. She makes a compelling case that many of our leaders have placed cultural acceptance over their kingdom assignment.
For me, she put words to something I’d had some nebulous “feeling” about but didn’t have the words or the bigger picture view to make sense of.
That’s what good writers do.
If you’re a Christian, and care about the future of the faith, this is an important resource to add to your toolkit.
Basham makes a good faith argument, and ends with a powerful testimony of why it’s so important that we preach the Gospel and only the Gospel. People need Jesus. They don’t need a caricature of Him that wins points with the culture.
I’m buying the paper version, too, so I can review her 53 pages of footnotes and make notes of my own. I encourage you to do the same.

Great Book, but bringing the receipts is a mixed blessing

In todays age of TikTok/YouTube shirt doom scrolling, reading/listening to an investigative reporter go deep into the weeds of an issue by presenting a mountain of evidence to support her claims make take some getting used to (but it’s surprisingly a breath of fresh air)

I encourage everyone to stick it out even though it might be tough to follow all of the different characters in the story sometimes (real life is complex).

The author does a wonderful job and (despite my previous comments) I look forward to the author’s future work exploring any one of many subjects (environmental movement, LBGTQ+, etc) in further detail

Thorough and Revealing

The author's careful and thorough investigation into her chosen subjects is both praiseworthy and revealing, as the things she uncovers and brings to light will probably be shocking to most average churchgoers who are unaware of he vile corruption that is in our evangelical institutions.

A reason why this book is worthwhile, is because it shows two ways in which the infiltration of leftist dogma is harmful to the preaching of the Gospel- it either conflates the Gospel with leftist political agendas, or it obscures the definition of sin, thus keeping the conviction of God's law from sinners who need it.

Basham is to be commended for her willingness to endure the backlash from powerful people in pursuit of bringing truth to light.

Sheep farmers

Exposes how the evangelical episcopal aristocracy are more concerned about seeking the approval of the politically powerful and have lost their calling as shepherds. Instead, they have become sheep farmers, fleecing the flock to gain worldly status and gain a seat of honor among those who hate our Lord.

Reckless Truth

All the wolves and useful idiots are outraged Basham would reveal their grift in such devastating totality. Do yourself a favor and find out why. Very well done and LONG overdue!

church deception

I like the fact that someone is talking about the way some pastors are creating their own agenda for their own greed. Don't listen to how others understand the Bible read it for yourself.

Contrary to the Critics…

I almost didn’t read this book due to the seemingly convincing criticism on X from seemingly reasonable evangelical leaders.
“He who first presents his case appears to be right, until his neighbor comes to examine him.” (Proverbs 18:17).
If you give this book a shot, you will soon realize what all the hubbub is really about. All of the nit-picking complaints on X, and 1-star review bombs, are just smoke and noise to distract from the thesis of this book: many pastors and teachers have given into the temptation to be soft on the very issues our cultural is pressing hard today. Shepherds ought to care for their sheep, with rod and staff, ready to strike down the bear or wolf should the need arise. Many however have shown reluctance to strike the wolves, and are wary of reeling in the sheep that are going astray. They have, well intentioned or not, forsaken the charge given to them by God. This book is a call for them to remember their job, to turn away from this cultural sliding into compromise, and to repent.

The cruelest thing we can do, is to preach that you can be Christian and worldly. We not only confirm these poor burdened worldly souls in their sin, but we rob them of the only true remedy that can be found in repentance and turning to Christ; receiving free grace and life-transforming power from his pierced hands. Proverbs 12:10 says, “the compassion of the wicked is cruel,” and that is exactly what this sell-out gospel message is that some have been peddling, or at the very least been silent about— cruel.

Megan Basham is not uncharitable, or rude, or demeaning in her tone, but simply describes the current evangelical scene as she, and many others see it. Listen to the book and judge for yourself whether the critics are fair, or if they are straining gnats so that you will ignore the camel.

Balanced but Honest and Truthful

Megan Basham does a reporters job in top form. Her “op. ed.” Editorialist mind is informed by her dogged research. And all this is done as a real, true regenerate Christian, who wonders whether she herself would’ve come to the faith if the truth of Scripture in regard to her own sin and her responsibility for it had never confronted her. I will say no more other than it’s well worth your time to travel the lines of her brave and yet, in one sense (the best sense), matter-of-fact, Scripture-informed common sense as a regular Christian in the pew takes you “post tenebras lux.”
