About this listen

National best-selling author Elaine Viets says the Gourmet Girl mysteries have "all the right ingredients!" Chloe Carter's boyfriend, Josh Driscoll, is prepping for the opening of Simmer, Boston's hottest new restaurant. But at a fund-raiser featuring samples of Josh's cuisine, a trendy club owner is found bludgeoned to death - by Josh's state-of-the-art, professional-grade food processor, the ominously-named Robocoupe. By opening night at Simmer, the list of suspects is almost longer than the line to get in. And Chloe is struggling to solve the crime before the final course is served.

Editorial reviews

Mother-daughter writing team Jessica Park and Susan Conant create a savory literary dish featuring equal parts chick lit, cozy, and cookbook. Performed by Kim McKean, previously a guest star on HBO's True Blood and ABC’s Private Practice, with the intonations and attitudes of a young woman hungry for both good food and love, this second of the Gourmet Girl Mysteries features Chloe Carter caught between love and exasperation as boyfriend Josh - the gourmet chef she saved from suspicion as a murder suspect in the first book - prepares to open Simmer, Boston’s trendiest restaurant. A rival, murdered in Josh’s kitchen, is certainly not a tasty ingredient in a relationship or a dining establishment and it falls to Chloe to rescue both.

I’m hooked on these relatable characters! Being an educator who is very familiar with the world of social work I find this book to be a wonderful breathe of fresh air. I highly recommend this text!

Hooked!

Disappointed in the choice to add several instances of cursing that specified a religious term. It wasn't in previous books in the series and I was looking forward to continuing. However, I won't knowingly purchase material that uses this.

Disappointed

Overall good but a stretch that Chloe thought her boss was a killer. Liked it anyway.

Story line

I enjoyed this book a great deal. Chole is a bit ditzy but she has a good heart. The mystery good and fast paced. Josh is adorable and adds a nice switch to the mystery aspect of the story. I would reccommend this to lovers of cozy mysteries.

Story was good but narrator sounded whiny and bored. It took me much longer to finish because of that.

the narrator is absolutely awful!

The reader is very monotone but the story is good. Lots of plot twists! Overall not bad just not my cup of tea.

Although the story wasn’t bad, I found myself too distracted by the annoying voice of the narrator and could not finish listening.

Irritating narrator

I can normally get past most things that other people give poor reviews to, but not this time. The story may be fine, I'm never going to know. The narrator's voice is just so monotone and so ...... deadly dull that I made it 12 minutes into the first chapter and was fidgeting like my seat was on fire. I just can't. I hate to put the whole thing down to 1 star, but without being able to make it through the entire book, I can't tell you it was any better than that. The narrator just KILLED the whole thing for me.

Reviews stated that the earlier book was a bit better and I tried to find it but I'm not paying to read (Kindle) or listen (Audible) when the one I've got has gotten such deadly reviews. Unfortunately, this narrator is so bad that I don't care if the every book the author has written is free, I'm not interested.

I love cooking, love cozy mysteries and really was pre-disposed to love this series. Sorry I just can't.

I Couldn't Make It Through The First Chapter

A narrator can ruin a book - as this one did.
This might be a decent book but I’ll never find out because the narrator is so bad that I couldn’t endure more than a couple of minutes of her grating voice.

Horrible narrator

First book was passable, barely. This one is dreadful. Story, characters - blah. Narrator is horrible. Harsh, grating, little inflection. Am returning the others I have in the series. My advice? Skip this series entirely!
