About this listen

When a seemingly simple case turns complicated, respected attorney Barbara Holloway must rethink her game plan. Gregarious Las Vegas entertainer and ex-con Wally Lederer claims he's turned his life around. But when Jay Wilkins, a childhood friend, accuses Wally of stealing a valuable artifact, it's up to Barbara to ferret out the truth. Wally swears he's innocent. But when a murder takes place and the police name Wally as their prime suspect, Barbara knows he is in serious trouble.

As Barbara begins to "dig up the dirt", she is shocked to learn that Jay's wife is now missing and that Jay himself is far from being the upstanding businessman he claimed to be. Before long, new evidence points toward an unlikely killer. But the truth that would protect her client could jeopardize another life she means to save.

Kudos for Anna Fields

Just writing in support of Anna Fields, who is one of the best narrators in the business. Her male voices are particularly good, and her inflection and intonation are always superb.

Barbara Holloway has become as familiar as an old shoe through this series; it's definitely worth starting at the beginning, even if you have to go back to the old fashioned printed word for some of the early installments.

Sleight of Hand is not my favorite of the series, but it's entertaining. You can't just skip over it because I wasn't all that impressed, now can you?

Interesting, intelligent included listen!

According to Audible's algorithms, included and TRENDING Christmas titles are still occurring 3 weeks post-holiday. This seems very peculiar and (hopefully!) unrealistic. And yes, I've cleared my cache. Aaanyway, it's refreshing to listen to something intelligent that's included in membership. FYI, Audible, I'm also rather weary of UK English Domestic Thriller titles being recommended to me. I avoid these titles like the plague for personal reasons. Amazon seems to be pushing them much more than American, S.A., Canadian, Australian or other International authors. Again, something the algorithm ignores. If it were anything resembling Google's search engine, I'd immediately be inundated with books precisely matching this review. To summarize, this series of books is very good. And this is Oregon as it was. I've come to prefer Anna Fields' narration.

A jolly good listen

I saw in some other reviews, criticism of Anna Fields’s narration. I like her voice and I think of it as Barbara Holloway’s own voice. She is quite adept at switching personas.

Now that’s out of the way, as usual I always wonder at the twists and how Wilhelm always fills in those gaps in time when various suspects had the perfect, although small, window available to commit murder, and return to the alibi they have created.

This book was particularly humorous. I am referring to the exchanges between Barbara and Prosecuting attorney. He, being perpetually pissed off and disliking Barbara with a passion, and Barbara’s sarcasm had me laughing out loud at various times throughout and, especially her impatience with Bailey. 😄

I think this is my favorite so far and recommend it to Barbara Holloway fans!

Another excellent novel by Kate Wilhelm.

This book didn't start slowly like some of the others. Really good from beginning to end. Anna Fields does a great job.

Really Good Story!

Just as with book #8... I enjoyed this book very much. The story & characters were all interesting and the narrator, Anna Fields, did a great job. I look forward to listening to more books in this series.
