Meh...

Great narrator but I was only impressed by 1 story and even it ended on a "huh?" note...

Not scary

Yeah I don't know what I was thinking but really only one story had my mind going. Otherwise they were just good short stories but definitely not horror or spooky.

Short Stories

I'm not really sure what to think about this book. It was ok; not very scary in my opinion but the writing was good. I honestly had a hard time actually listening and not just tuning it out as background noise. But, I think this author is good, his writing is good and if it would have been a longer book I think I would have liked it better. The narrator did a good job. He had a good voice for a horror story. If you're into quick fast horror shorts then I think you'd probably like this book.

I was given a free copy of this book for honest and unbiased review.

Definitely listen in the dark

Any additional comments?

**I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.**

The intro suggests reading at night, alone, in the dark. I thought I had the perfect setting: my porch, under the moonlight, just before the storm. While it was a good setting, it wasn’t the perfect one. My suggestion: camping.

Having just spend a few nights in the middle of nowhere with my family, I kept thinking about them while listening. The perfect campfire, my love, my three teenage kids (one with his girlfriend), owls hooting, coyotes howling across the lake, and every single person begging for scary stories. That would have been the perfect time to break out the speakers and listen to the creepy low tones of Mr. Bennett’s voice.

The stories combined with the perfect narrator for these kinds of stories are not quite scary enough while you’re sitting close enough to the comforts of home. But listen to them while you’re in the middle of nowhere without your own walls to keep out the creepers (maybe driving down a long highway at night where all you can see is what your headlights illuminate) and you might get just the right amount of tingle dripping down your spine.

Now, I can’t wait to go camping again with my family and see what they think about these stories.

I agree with some reviewers that the spooky factor could be dialed up a bit for most of us. But the writing is solid and Mr. Bennett is a fantastic choice for the narration.

Good quick listen, nothing that can’t be listened to as a family

Why 3, 4, and 5 stars? Performance spot on so give. The stories. Good but when my library has so many great 4 and 5 star collections of stories I just gc ant put this in the same level. That being said I add this disclaimer: We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. That being said the average of the two is 4 stars for the overall. They are good stories. Listen and enjoy. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Four fun short horror stories

My rating: 3.5 stars
Audiobook narrator J. Scott Bennett rating: 4.5 stars

This was a fun collection of four short horror stories with varying levels of disturbing-ness. I really like the preface in which the author gives some advice on how to best handle these stories and the side effects in which you may encounter. There were a few spots of comic relief like that.

Of the four stories, I think I found the third one the most interesting and fun to listen to. The Montana setting is well described and I like the possibilities of that particular story-line developing into a larger novel.

The narrator did a great job using a story-telling-like voice and he changed his voice for different characters in the books (though, the majority of this book was told from the viewpoint of the narrator). I am very curious to listen to the next one in the series.

Thanks, Scott, for the free copy of this book!

Not as Good as Book 2

A decent collection of haunting short stories. I actually listened to Book 2 first unintentionally, enjoyed those stories a bit more. Fogliani has a great imagination and is really able to bring you into each story with his writing. My only complaint is that they weren’t really terrifying, and I kept thinking that I know Fogliani can do better, since he definitely does in the second book. My advice would be to skip this one and just head to Book 2.

J. Scott Bennett is one of my favorite narrators, something with the tone of his voice. He does a great job with the narration of this story. Our genres don’t always align so I am always excited to find one that he has done that is in the horror genre.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

No scares here

I only like one story and even it ended with too many questions. I would not recommend this book for horror but maybe comedy. I received this book at my request and I have left my honest review here.
