About this listen

Newbery Honor-winner Joan Bauer's newest protagonist always sees the positive side of any situation - and listeners will cheer him on!

Jeremiah is the world’s biggest baseball fan. He really loves baseball and he knows just about everything there is to know about his favorite sport. So when he’s told he can’t play baseball following an operation on his heart, Jeremiah decides he’ll do the next best thing and become a coach.

Hillcrest, where Jeremiah and his father Walt have just moved, is a town known for its championship baseball team. But Jeremiah finds the town caught up in a scandal and about ready to give up on baseball. It’s up to Jeremiah and his can-do spirit to get the town - and the team - back in the game.

Full of humor, heart, and baseball lore, Soar is Joan Bauer at her best.

Critic reviews

"Jeremiah's voice is perfect: plucky, vulnerable, pragmatic, smart, and immensely endearing. Bauer masterfully manages the various plotlines.... An outstanding, tender exploration of courage and the true nature of heroism and, for good measure, a fine homage to America's game, as well." (Kirkus, starred review)

"Bauer’s latest feel-good novel is distinguished by a largehearted warmth, its able characterizations, a page-turning plot, and winning humor." (Booklist, starred review)

"Joan Bauer is a superb author who knows how to get readers to care about her characters.... This book is perfect for middle school students and would make a great read-aloud." (School Library Connection, starred review)

Wonderful book

This is the most moving audiobook I have ever listened to. It's a great story about baseball and courage and love. A satisfying plot and cast, especially Jeremiah, a character you'll never want to forget. AND a superb, pitch-perfect performance by Michael Crouch, which just makes it almost too much. A perfect book for the kid you love, and perhaps a perfect book for us adults who need to remember the nobility of team sport at its best. Highest possible recommendation.

Heart with wings!

If you love baseball and people with courage and heart, you will love this book. Michael Crouch draws you into the story with his voice. His Jeremiah makes you laugh and cry. He expertly introduces you to the other cast members who are sometimes quirky, endearing and frustrating. You will fall in love and will stand up cheering!!

Not only for baseball fans

Ardent fans will surely love it. So will most every one else--middle schoolers to adults. I loved the match of reader to story.

Not just for adolescents. Absolutely wonderful!

Joan Bauer does the most wonderful job of character development. I really wanted to meet the father and son in this book. The whole story is so full up difficulties, love and life that I had trouble putting it down. The reader did a great job too. I was hooked immediately.

Very OK book

I bought this book to read with my son who loves baseball. He is the one who has pointed out that the baseball scenes in the book do not make sense. If you are a ball player this book can be hard to listen to.
