Publisher's summary

Includes a new epilogue narrated by the author exclusively for the audiobook edition.

What would it be like to sit down for an impassioned, entertaining conversation with Hillary Clinton? In Something Lost, Something Gained, Hillary offers her candid views on life and love, politics, liberty, democracy, the threats we face, and the future within our reach.

She describes the strength she draws from her deepest friendships, her Methodist faith, and the nearly fifty years she’s been married to President Bill Clinton—all with the wisdom that comes from looking back on a full life with fresh eyes. She takes us along as she returns to the classroom as a college professor, enjoys the bonds inside the exclusive club of former First Ladies, moves past her dream of being president, and dives into new activism for women and democracy.

From canoeing with an ex-Nazi trying to deprogram white supremacists to sweltering with salt farmers in the desert trying to adapt to the climate crisis in India, Hillary brings us to the front lines of our biggest challenges. For the first time, Hillary shares the story of her operation to evacuate Afghan women to safety in the harrowing final days of America’s longest war. But we also meet the brave women dissidents defying dictators around the world, gain new personal insights about her old adversary Vladimir Putin, and learn the best ways that worried parents can protect kids from toxic technology. We also hear her fervent and persuasive warning to all American voters. In the end, Something Lost, Something Gained is a testament to the idea that the personal is political, and the political is personal, providing a blueprint for what each of us can do to make our lives better.

Hillary has “looked at life from both sides now.” In this book, she shares the latest chapter of her inspiring life and shows us how to age with grace and keep moving forward, with grit, joy, purpose, and a sense of humor.

Great historical data, disturbing performance!

I appreciated being able to put many of the important issues that our country and world have faced since the 1970s into concise and factual order from someone who has lived through and contributed to it. However, I wish I had ordered the book instead of the audiobook. Clinton’s sarcasm and snarkiness in her presentation has certainly ruined this audiobook for me. She has also hawked every other book she has written, something I think is inappropriate in her text. If I wanted to read any more of Clinton’s works, I would have googled it.

She Gives Me Hope - Always

I have always been so in awe of Hillary Clinton. I was so proud of her in so many ways. I was a huge believer in her husband, and was so proud to be a supporter of his work during the time he was President. But my awesome scale has been raised yet again by the words I have just finished reading. I have been so very concerned that this country is going to fall into the hands of some pretty scary people, and have even planned to get my passport should I find it necessary to leave the shores of a country I have always loved and been so very proud to claim as my place of birth. And I have been so very scared of a possible future in a land ruled by the current Republican candidate for President. I am still scared, but I feel, as I have before after finishing a book by Ms. Clinton, that we may yet survive this incredibly scary time in our lives. I have admired her for so very many years. I was and continue to be so proud to have been privileged to live in a country where she has been allowed to continue her work and follow her passions. I am sick to this day a she lost her bid for the Presidency, and I have tried to tell myself that there was a reason for it, while trying to understand why we being subjected to a life, however temporary, with someone who has no concept of what this country represents to so many people here and around the world. I am scared. Scared for me and scared for this country. But I digress. She has once again given me hope. It still hurts that she would have been a gift in so many ways had she been our President. She worked in so many positions that allowed her to be familiar with all the goings on and with so many positions in high places that gave her an insight into the workings those that support the President. She has so much experience in so many things that a President needs to know, unlike the Republican who desires that position yet again. But, again, back to the subject at hand. She seems, in her book, to have reconciled that the dream she pursued for so long is not to be hers. I can only imagine that the gods have other plans for her that will be more important than what she may have achieved as President. She has so much to share. I enjoyed every minute I spent with this book. I knew she has always been active in to many things, but did not realize just how much she has given of herself to so many others around the world. This book was so enjoyable to read and learn of her dealings with so many people around the world. Her work with and for women hare amazing. And with all she has done, she has managed to continue to hold a wonderful relationship with her husband, her daughter, and even her childhood friends. She has been wise enough to keep those people close to her and to have people she trusts listen to her thoughts and ideas, and then to listen to the advice and responses from them. She works with so many people around the world to save lives and help people to achieve the things to which they aspire. She has a wonderful sense of humor. She has a faith that is a solid part of her. Her family is her base. So many things about her make her such a “regular human”! But she is not a regular human. Just look at what she has achieved and the help she given to so many. I hope people read this book so that they can know what a remarkable person she is. I wish is could personally thank her for all she has shared with us and for all the hard work and the miracles she has accomplished, But I will just hope she realized what an inspiration she is to so many people in this world. Thank you, Mrs. Clinton. You have made this a better world and are an inspiration to women everywhere.

Historical value

I found it a little confusing to keep the dates clear since the events were not chronologically noted. I am the richer , I learned a lot.

what a life!

This is by far my favorite of Hillary's books. The courage, humanity, and long trajectory of service of Hillary's life are astonishing and deeply moving. Thankyou Hillary for taking the risk to tell this part of your story.

80% Good

Most books are stories and she definitely has one to share. I simply hated the opening chapters on Trump however I get why she needs to share what she did on him. I learned a few more things about politics. This needed to written and I hope people will read it to capture what they need to learn about everything she shared.
