About this listen

A New York Times best seller, this extraordinary memoir from Huma Abedin - Hillary Clinton’s famously private top aide and longtime advisor - offers “a gripping testament to the power of a woman finding her voice, owning her ambition, and sharing her truth” (Glennon Doyle).

Abedin’s stunning memoir garnered an extraordinary amount of media coverage, with appearances on CBS Sunday Morning, the Today show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The View, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Christiane Amanpour, and coverage in many other outlets, including The Washington Post, The New York Times, and NPR.

The daughter of Indian and Pakistani intellectuals and advocates, Abedin grew up in the United States and Saudi Arabia and traveled widely. Both/And grapples with family, legacy, identity, faith, marriage, motherhood - and work - with wisdom, sophistication, grace, and clarity.

Abedin launched full steam into a college internship in the office of the First Lady in 1996, never imagining that her work at the White House would blossom into a career in public service, nor that her career would become an all-consuming way of life. She thrived in rooms with diplomats and sovereigns, entrepreneurs and artists, philanthropists and activists, and witnessed many crucial moments in 21st-century American history - Camp David for urgent efforts at Middle East peace in the waning months of the Clinton administration, Ground Zero in the days after the September 11 attacks, the inauguration of the first African American president of the United States, and the convention floor when America nominated its first female presidential candidate.

Abedin’s relationship with Hillary Clinton has seen both women through extraordinary personal and professional highs, as well as unimaginable lows. Here, for the first time, is a deeply personal account of Clinton as mentor, confidante, and role model. Abedin cuts through caricature, rumor, and misinformation to reveal a crystal-clear portrait of Clinton as a brilliant and caring leader, a steadfast friend, generous, funny, hardworking, and dedicated.

Both/And is “the story of a person of substance - someone determined to tell her own story” (The New York Times) including the heartbreaking chronicle of her marriage to Anthony Weiner, what drew her to him, how much she wanted to believe in him, the devastation wrought by his betrayals - and their shared love for their son.

Abedin’s journey through the opportunities and obstacles, the trials and triumphs, of a full and complex life is a testament to her profound belief that in an increasingly either/or world, she can be both/and. Abedin’s compassion and courage, her resilience and grace, her work ethic and mission are an inspiration to women of all ages.

Great memoir

I decided to get this even though I had just gotten the book as a Christmas present for myself a week earlier. I am glad I got the book (nicely autographed by the author!) but glad I decided to get the audio version as well for a change of pace. I was blown away. The story Ms Abedin tells is marked by such grace, intelligence and patriotism--something I was in desperate need of in these divided times. What is heartbreaking is the account of the multiple betrayals by her husband, Anthony Weiner, and Hillary Clinton's election loss to Donald Trump. But what is impressive is the resilience she (Abedin) repeatedly demonstrated and also the genuine patriotism that animated her career in public service. Ms Abedin is a thoroughly admirable person (though her choices were problematic) and I enjoyed learning about how her faith and strong family ties enabled her to stand tall. As a bonus--the author has a lovely voice and her narration of her story is perfect. Perfect. I am glad she shared her story and I really thank her for the sacrifices she made to try to get the best person elected in 2016 (Bernie Sanders fans may not like the description of their hero!).

Fascinating

Fascinating account of a life behind the scenes of the White House, state department and campaign trails. Ms. Abedin is a brilliant woman with a very interesting background and who lives an inspiring life as a Muslim American woman. Loved the entire book.

There is much good in this book

There is so much in this book. I appreciate her descriptions of Hillary Clinton’s kindness and steadiness which I had not known before. I was also touched by Huma’s descriptions of her life in Islam and the goodness and support it gives her. There is so much criticism around this religion, it is good to hear the positives and life with in her family.

What a fascinating life

I didn't know much about Huma Abedin prior to reading this, other than wow, why has she stayed with her husband through so many indiscretions? I'm so glad I listened to this, she is a strong, thoughtful and smart individual who has led a truly incredible life. If you don't like Hillary Clinton, do not listen to this book, it is not for you. Since Abedin has worked with Clinton for twenty plus years there is a lot about her in this book. I enjoyed the close relationship she has with her family, and how rather than set money aside for marriage, as was more traditional in their culture, that her parents set money aside for education. It'll be interesting to see what Huma Abedin does next.

Read this book. Inspiring. Revealing. Honest.

Huma Abedin writes her heart out in this memoir. With plenty of political nuggets for those of us who care. Her story as a Muslim American is soul touching and her political journey reminds me why I love this country. I share similarities with some of Huma’s life and the way she expressed them was artful. She made me believe in the power of politics and engagement again. And reminded me that we are all human and deserving of respect, understanding, and the right to vote. As an aside, I read the New York Times review of this book and found it a complete piece of crap - focused on getting more news about Hillary Clinton. This is Huma’s story and I am so profoundly grateful she shared it.

What a surprise

I always had a lot of respect for Huma and how she handled her personal relationship with such grace. I also felt like I got a first hand glimpse into Hilary Clinton. Enjoyed this book from beginning to end
