About this listen

In the Shadow of the Moon

When Laura Truitt first sees the dilapidated plantation house, she's overcome by a sense of familiarity. Inside, the owner claims to have been waiting for years and offers an old photograph of a woman with Laura's face. Soon afterward, when a lunar eclipse inexplicably thrusts Laura back in time to Civil War Georgia, she finds herself fighting not just for her heart but for her very survival.

Whispers of Goodbye

Alone and with nothing left to fear, Catherine deClaire Reed answers her sister's desperate plea and travels to the cold comfort of her home in Reconstruction Louisiana. But Elizabeth is nowhere to be found. No one - including her husband - has seen her for days. Now Catherine must search for her sister in a place where secrets wait behind every closed door.

I loved these stories! They really held my attention, and zi found myself talking to the characters.

I enjoyed these books immensely and have bought all of Karen White's audible books. But I didn't care for the performer's/reader's voice inflection and emphasis at ALL during the second book. I am a student of English and literature and strongly dislike misuse of emphasis and pronunciation when it is read. I found myself correcting the wrong pronunciation out loud every time I heard it. The 3 stars were actually 5 for the first book's performer and no stars at all for the second performer. I found her interpretation very distracting.

First book great , 2nd contrived and drawn

I like these, upgraded first books from the author. I liked the first book better than the 2nd. The 2nd had some strengths that got lost in the prolonged drama of the story. The heroine in the 2nd was slow emotionally and intellectually to the point of annoyance. She created much of the drama in her life because of it. Sad too as story had great potential. These together are worth a credit.

Two Books, Quite Different

I enjoyed the first storyline better than the second, but both were pretty predictable. In the first story, it’s obvious from the onset that the protagonist will survive her journey because their is a photo of her in the past & the picture is of the owner of a historic home she buys. I was taken out of both stories a few times when the historical characters used maxims like “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” even though the original quote hadn’t yet been written when the stories take place (original quote 1888, Germany; stories take place in 1860s, USA.) The protagonist in the second story got on my nerves several times - mostly because she kept going on and on about being strong and self sufficient but needed rescuing every-other chapter. She also jumped to ridiculous conclusions time and again when the real criminal was glaringly obvious, so I couldn’t cheer for her. Still, I would recommend the first book - lots of potential for other time traveler stories using same basic ideas.

Wonderful Trek back in time

The first story in this compilation is a wonderful trek back in time to the Civil War era. The author did a terrific job of weaving in the hardships and realities of the war on every day life. The characters are rich and even the villains are believable in their motives. I understand this is the first of the books Karen White wrote and I can see why it got a publishers attention. Her voice is unique, her descriptions powerful, her characters deep. The narration of this story was superb. Voices were distinct and accents done well. This is a story that will stick with me. I'm afraid I wasn't able to get into the second story. Maybe the power of the first was still too strong to draw me in.

VERY TOP OF MY "FAVORITE AUTHOR LIST"!!!!!

Karen White has absolutely moved to the top of my Favorite Author List! I haven't listened to one yet that I haven't been totally thrilled with. This book in particular is such a bargain for the credit. It is 2 complete books for one credit. If I didn't misunderstand what was said in the beginning, this book was her first two books published. They are truly fantastic books. The narrators are easy listening and definitely not distracting with their individual voices. With the hundreds of books in my library, I want another Karen White novel! Gezzz, that just means I have to buy more credits!

Don't let this one slip by you!! :)

Didn't want it to end.

I was pleasantly surprised by both the stories and the narration.

I must admit that as I listened to the intro I didn't expect much. Here is another author who is a devotee of Diana Gabaldon (as am I) which led me to expect "rip offs" of Outlander series stories. This was nothing like that. The characters are richly created and developed. For the circumstances of the characters to bring tears to my eyes is an author's gift I dearly love. I highly recommend this book!
