Publisher's summary

Eleanor Murray will always remember her childhood on Edisto Island, where her late father, a local shrimper, shared her passion for music. Now her memories of him are all that tempers the guilt she feels over the accident that put her sister in a wheelchair and the feelings she harbors for her sister's husband.

To help support her sister, Eleanor works at a Charleston investment firm during the day, but she escapes into her music, playing piano at a neighborhood bar. Until the night her enigmatic boss walks in and offers her a part-time job caring for his elderly aunt, Helena, back on Edisto. For Eleanor, it's a chance to revisit the place where she was her happiest and to share her love of music with grieving Helena, whose sister recently died under mysterious circumstances.

An island lush with sweetgrass and salt marshes, Edisto has been a peaceful refuge for Helena, who escaped with her sister from war-torn Hungary in 1944. The sisters were well-known on the island, where they volunteered in their church and community. But now Eleanor will finally learn the truth about their past: secrets that will help heal her relationship with her own sister and set Eleanor free....

Love can cover a multitude of sins....

First things first....what beautiful writing, that's the first thing I fell in love with. The way things are described,  I can imagine the smell of the grass that's described or I'm feeling that mood of sadness and despair that's being felt.
It's pain, and guilt that Eleanor (Ellie) feels toward her sister Eve.
One, for an accident she feels she caused her sister that put her in a wheelchair.
Two, for falling in love with her sister's husband.
Ellie wants to move on, but with the guilt, she doesn't think she can. She feel like she owes her sister so much!
Ellie's boss runs into her at a night club playing the piano and offers her a job taking care of his elderly aunt Helena who use to be a piano player herself.
Helena, dealing with her own guilt, pain, and depression is not happy that Ellie is there. She just wants to die along with her story.....

"Sold privately over the years, and hanging in homes where most people don't realize that the painting is more than a lovely picture of a landscape or a beautiful woman. They don't see the blood of 6,000,000 Jews. They don't think to look, or if they know, they look the other way.
What a powerful book of history!"

Intriguing story

This was for our book club "beach read". Although we have read quite a few books that have included WWII history, this story included it in a new and different setting. I liked that I didn't have to think too hard to get the plot, story, and themes. It was entertaining.

This author never disappoints

This book is a must listen. A story that spans through several generation and is written so well that you hate for it too end. I read a lot of Karen white's novels and shall continue until I have read them all if she promises to keep writing I promise to keep listening.

Engaging and insightful.

I enjoyed this story thoroughly. Although the romantic outcome was predictable, this was really only a minor storyline woven amongst others.
