Continuing on the path of The Gift of Fear (Gavin deBecker) Spotting Danger Before It Spots You is geared towards the average citizen who at any moment could find themselves faced with a violent encounter but may lack the training needed to detect the situation early or react to it appropriately.
- Written in a manner that can be easily understood by the average citizen who may lack any formal training in the areas of situational awareness and personal safety.
- Not everyone carries a gun or studies martial arts, that’s why this book focuses on the skillsets necessary to detect and avoid violent encounters.
- Breaks the information into three easy-to-follow phases. Phase one increases the listeners understanding of predatory mindset and violence. Phase two walks the listener through the development of proper situational awareness. Phase three provides the listener with the methods for implementing what they’ve learned, and instructions for how to increase their level of personal security.
- Criminals pick their victims (soft targets) in under a minute and base it largely on the victim’s body language. Learn to change body language and be seen as a hard target.
- The author is someone who has traveled the world as a government agent (a federal air marshal) and made a career of situational awareness.
- Foreword written by best-selling author and violence expert Lt. Col. Dave Grossman.

Critic reviews
"A work that is greater than the sum of its parts, and unlike anything else available on this critical topic. This book stands out because of Gary’s incredibly thorough and comprehensive presentation of situational awareness, a life-saving ability to spot danger in order to protect ourselves and our loved ones. I have read many books on the subject, and I can honestly say that no one has even come close to matching Spotting Danger Before It Spots You when it comes to teaching situational awareness. This fundamental skill is key to surviving and overcoming the array of threats that confront the average citizen in the world today. Armed with the skills taught in this book, you will not need to live in fear; you will live instead in a state of awareness and readiness."—Dave Grossman, Lt. Colonel, US Army (ret.), author of On Killing, On Combat, and Assassination Generation, Director, Killology Research Group
"In quick, sharply paced chapters full of well-chosen anecdotes and bulleted points, Quesenberry instructs readers on how to expand their awareness of the people and things in their immediate area, how to assume an aggressive mindset in order to anticipate how actual predators think, and even the basics of one-on-one self-defense. Much of what the author relates is elementary in nature—travel advisories all over the world urge some variation of situational awareness—but the clarity of this manual makes it stand out. A vigorous and memorable primer on heightening awareness to prevent or counter danger."—Kirkus Reviews

Situational awareness and the knowledge of how to utilize that awareness should be one’s first line of defense (whether one chooses to carry a weapon for self-defense or not.) And, like any perishable skill, it must be exercised regularly.
This book is a relatively short read, but chock full of essential information on everything from the criminal mindset to recommendations on how to improve one’s own situational awareness.
I HIGHLY recommend reading the book once just to find out just how much truly invaluable content the author has to offer. (The author’s user friendly reading style is an added plus.) Then re-read it carefully and incrementally as a training manual - stopping to practice each exercise until it becomes second nature.
