About this listen

The New York Times best seller that reveals the safety, security, and survival techniques that 99 percent of Americans don’t know - but should.

When Jason Hanson joined the CIA in 2003, he never imagined that the same tactics he used as a CIA officer for counter intelligence, surveillance, and protecting agency personnel would prove to be essential in every day civilian life. In addition to escaping handcuffs, picking locks, and spotting when someone is telling a lie, he can improvise a self-defense weapon, pack a perfect emergency kit, and disappear off the grid if necessary. He has also honed his “positive awareness” - a heightened sense of his surroundings that allows him to spot suspicious and potentially dangerous behavior - on the street, in a taxi, at the airport, when dining out, or in any other situation.

In his engaging and empowering book Spy Secrets That Can Save Your Life, Jason shares this know-how with listeners, revealing how to:

  • Prevent home invasions, carjackings, muggings, and other violent crimes
  • Run counter-surveillance and avoid becoming a soft target
  • Recognize common scams at home and abroad
  • Become a human lie detector in any setting, including business negotiations
  • Gain peace of mind by being prepared for anything instead of uninformed or afraid

With the skill of a trained operative and the relatability of a suburban dad, Jason Hanson brings his top-level training to everyday Americans in this must-have guide to staying safe in an increasingly dangerous world.

good sales pitch for his products,

Common sense, but good to hear repeated from time to time, applicable to other parts of life beside self defense.

It was ok

It's good information, I'm just not head over heels about a book format. Seems like it would be a better in a video presentation. I knew of the book before the Shark Tank presentation and was having trouble understanding the validity of it being worthy on the show. I get it though, as everything comes down to marketing. The self defense and preparedness ideas are nothing but a business concept when trying to grow a related business, or even promote the concept. So I can't fault Jason Hanson for that angle. I also applaud him for narrating it himself. I like books read by the author, not some random unknown voice. The book has good points, and tidbits that are far fetched. The book did seem to end rather abruptly. There should have been more content, but perhaps that'll be addressed in future books. I'm not dissatisfied, but kind of left feeling "meh."

ok (minus)

it is noticeable the author lacks writing experience. some of the topics seem better covered by video and/or real life courses.

lots of anecdotes serve as springboards for how to behave or what to do in different situations. i bet these make an impression when told in real life, but it is difficult to convey the same even in audiobook format.

narrator ok.

Very entertaining, questionable practicality

I want to emphasize I really enjoyed this audiobook completing it in just a few days. My only complaint is that sometimes the advice from the author is 'if someone is swinging a punch at you, stab them.' I feel like a few legal qualifers or emphasis that it's for life threatening events is needed to avoid attempted murder charges.

Thank You.

He tells you what websites to go to for free spy tools, but when u go there you still have to pay! Everything else is very informative and I can definitely see the benefits of mastering these techniques and staying vigilant.

Borrring

A couple good pieces of information but most examples are unrealistic. Could have learned most of it on google in 20 minutes.

Essential Skills for Every Human in Todays World!

It was great to realize that I'm getting some things right in life. But, I couldn't stop thinking about all the people living as sheep in a world full of wolves. This book empowers readers to transform themselves into sheep dogs!

Reading alone will not save a person's life, but the knowledge in this book, if practiced in daily life, most certainly can! Like the author, this information is not new to me, but I read it out of personal interest. But again, I can not express how important this information is, especially for someone who is new to it. And even for a seasoned enthusiast, this book is a pertinent reminder of the everyday value of tips that can save your life, or empower you to protect the ones you love. Read this book and tap into your inner spy!
