About this listen

The thrilling adventure based on the acclaimed Star Trek: Picard TV series!

Starfleet was everything for Cristóbal Rios…until one horrible, inexplicable day when it all went wrong. Aimless and adrift, he grasps at a chance for a future as an independent freighter captain in an area betrayed by the Federation, the border region with the former Romulan Empire. His greatest desire: to be left alone.

But solitude isn’t in the cards for the captain of La Sirena, who falls into debt to a roving gang of hoodlums from a planet whose society is based on Prohibition-era Earth. Teamed against his will with Ledger, his conniving overseer, Rios begins an odyssey that brings him into conflict with outlaws and fortune seekers, with power brokers and relic hunters across the stars.

Exotic loves and locales await—as well as dangers galore—and Rios learns the hard way that good crewmembers are hard to find, even when you can create your own. And while his meeting with Jean-Luc Picard is years away, Rios finds himself drawing on the Starfleet legend’s experiences when he discovers a mystery that began on one of the galaxy’s most important days....

Not your usual Star Trek

It’s a good book. It’s entertaining, funny and enjoyable. You never get bored and it ends in a very satisfying way. Even the Spanish in the book was not pronounced too bad. It was a surprise to hear a few characters from TNG show up in the book. It was a satisfying listen and I recommend it.

Excellent

This was a great story set in the Picard series timeline. Similar to a Firefly / Serenity story about a captain and his ship and crew dealing with trying to keep ahead of the past while trying to make a new future in the grey area between right, wrong, the law, and gangsters in the vacuum left by the Federation. Really enjoyed the narration and the whole 1920s side theme tying in past series. It was nice that it wasn’t too tightly tied to the past shows but used the old shows and movies to develop the story. I would love to see a spin-off series or more audible books about the adventures of captain Rios.

Best in the Picard series so far!

I am an avid reader and listener of Star Trek books and audiobooks from across all the series and movies. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The performance of Robert Petkoff is fantastic and engaging like usual and John Jackson Miller asserts once again that he is one of the best Star Trek novel writers there is. It would be great for Ledger to show up in the live action Picard series! She has a personality that makes you appreciate her character and I laughed audibly several times at her quips. I would recommend this book to any Star Trek fan. It’s a solid 12+ hours of enjoyment and worth every penny!
