About this listen

The U.S.S. Enterprise™ discovers the wreckage of a starship upon the monstrous surface of a Dyson sphere, an artificially constructed habitat built around a star; and preserved in a weak transporter pattern is Starfleet engineering legend Montgomery "Scotty" Scott. Mr. Scott boards the Enterprise to find himself lost in a world that he barely recognizes, a world that has passed him by.

But soon the Enterprise finds itself trapped within the Dyson sphere and pulled into the star, and Scotty must work with Lt. Geordi La Forge to rescue the Enterprise.

The story was as expected however the performance did not match the kind of inflection and nuance that was found in the original episode.

A damn fine tale! The fact that two of Starfleet's finest narrated it is even better.

A great retelling.

Listening to James Doohan's voice is hypnotic and really made me feel in the scene. Looking forward for more audiobooks like this one.

I was really surprised almost immediately as the story began. I was expecting it to be brilliant considering the narrators that were enlisted. I understand the narrators will never be the characters from the series and usually have no problem visualizing the store as it takes place. I read and listen to many Star Trek novels. However, the interpretation of the characters in this story was so poorly done, that I could not get engaged in the story. Data was read as though he were a computer or robot with a monotone voice. Worf sounded like a homeless ferengi with a terrible hangover. I just could not get into the story with the characters being portrayed the way they were.

A terrible reading of a great story

Here's why it's an incredibly odd reading: James Doohan, who has proven himself an exceptional narrator across a wide catalog of audiobooks, does a really terrible job with this story. Had he not in fact starred on the actual episode, his inability to render any of the characters with an appreciable level of authenticity could be overlooked. But if you're a fan of the series, here's the challenge: see how long can you endure listening to Data's lines delivered as though he were a confused Dalek. I lasted just a few minutes before logging on to see if there's any way I can get back the very few dollars I spent on this book.

Incredibly Odd Reading

This episode of STNG is highly appealing... possibly only to we die-hard STOS fans. But if you loved the original series, you will love the episode. This novelization did not have much additional content, as I was led to believe. Mostly it had some things which were different from the episode, and frankly not as good as in the episode. It was nice to listen to James Doohan's voice, my his sweet soul rest in peace, but "all in all" I did not really enjoy this audiobook. I recommend rewatching the TV episode, instead.
