Internal pressures, enormous military expenditures, and the destruction of their primary energy source have brought the Klingon Empire to the verge of catastrophic collapse. To avert disaster, Gorkon, Chancellor of the Klingon High Council, proposes negotiations between the Federation and Klingon Empire, negotiations that will put an end to the years of hostility between the two powers and herald a new era of peace and cooperation. Captain James T. Kirk and the U.S.S. Enterprise™ are dispatched to escort the Chancellor safely into Federation space.
But a treacherous assassination brings negotiations to a sudden halt and places Kirk and Dr. McCoy in the hands of the Federation's greatest enemy. With time running out, Spock and the Enterprise crew work to uncover the deadly secret that threatens to propel the galaxy into the most destructive conflict it has ever known.

My main disappointment is the slight bits of abridgement some of which make large differences in the plot. For example Colonel West despite having a notable role in the film is never mentioned in the audio adaptation. At the end, the assassin is completely forgotten and left at large.
In conclusion, if they make a full novel and then make an unabridged audiobook of that, it will be epic. Until then, the movie is better.
Audio adaptation doesn’t do justice.

It is an abridged version. I knew that going in. The reason I wanted it in my library is because it is one of the original cast movie entries. However, the story is so abridged that it loses all the nuances, suspense, mystery & emotion of the story. In fact, if you didn't know the movie, the story wouldn't make sense.
Narration: It is a disservice and disappointment that these movie entry audiobooks as well as many of the older Star Trek books are done by either George Takei & James Doohan. As a HUGE original series fan, I appreciate hearing their voices; but only to a point, especially with Jimmy Doohan gone now. Yet neither are good voice actors and you never get absorbed into the story because of this. Doohan is better than Takei; but both border on a bad listen.
It would be a treat to see these redone in an unabridged version with a true voice actor that can capture the essence of each characters speech sound & patterns. Seems Robert Petkoff is the go-to man for many of the Star Trek books. It would be a better listen with him.
Great story---this audio, not so much
