About this listen

Neelie Sterling never did listen well to the conversation around her. Always preoccupied with an inner monologue, she sometimes missed things. She was happy when Matt, her veterinarian husband, told her he was getting a collie; she liked dogs. But he had said "colleague" - someone to help with his busy practice. The problems start when the pretty blond "collie" calls Neelie to say that she is pregnant with Matt's child. Sent into a tailspin, Neelie throws herself into her horse-training business, until she discovers that Matt is part of a group planning to leave for Zimbabwe to rescue a badly injured elephant. Thinking she can win Matt's heart again, Neelie manages to get included.

The trip is dangerous, exhilarating, and revealing. Neelie learns about herself as a wife and a woman. Back at home, she discovers secrets everywhere: with her parents, with Matt, even in training an elephant. Fighting to keep her life from unraveling as she struggles to gain the elephant's trust, she ultimately learns that healing can be mutual.

The Author Missed The Better Story.

Struggled to finish. Story more about main character and her run of the mill problem's not to mention the far-fetched events that happened in the story. The life and death issues dealt with by the African elephants and their human counterparts would have been a more interesting story.

I swear I have that problem too

There are times when I can sympathize with the main character in this book over her misunderstanding of certain words. I hear so many thinks incorrectly; however, I have always blamed in on my hearing. Anyway this was a good book. It is a bit of a love story, but not much. Mostly its about a divorcee picking up the pieces of her life and finding out what she is really about. The most annoying part of the book was the fact that she did keep misunderstanding words and phrases and I would sometimes have a very difficult time trying to figure out what the actual wording should have been. Although most of the time the reader let you know what was actually said, I struggled to reconcile the word or phrase with what she thought she heard. After a while, I just wished she omit those misunderstandings.

Overall, it was enjoyable.

entertaining, and charming

i read this book while living in africa. it was very charming and a fun read. i really appreciated how she didn't over humanize the elephants, but also discussed the hardships that wildlife in africa are facing these days, as well as the people of africa. light read, but enjoyable and fun.
