Publisher's summary

My name is Detective Ali Rivers, and my last date, which was already the stuff of nightmares, turned worse than I thought possible. I was on a horrible blind date (set up by my mother - long story) and got interrupted by going to a dead body in an alley in my city of Abernathy, Tennessee.

Next thing I know, a detective from another city is trying to take over my case (hell no), and instead I'm forced to have him on my team to solve the murder. Our case leads us to a ruthless, violent biker gang president who decides I'm the girl for him, a boxer, and a confidential informant who is a lovable stoner kid too honest for his own good.

While I'm trying to keep my mom's matchmaking machinations at bay - albeit poorly, our investigation's list of suspects are turning into victims. Chasing a violent killer in my city of Abernathy is difficult work, but someone's gotta do it.

Detective Story Done Right

A great first entry in the Abernathy Files series! Allison Rivers is a relatable, entertaining, and strong protagonist. She isn’t some superhuman detective that breaks reader immersion with silly abilities. She truly uses her skills and knowledge to solve murders. The cast of characters are distinguished and memorable, and it’s easy to choose a favorite supporting character. The narrator did struggle a little bit with nailing accents, but nothing too egregious that affected my enjoyment of listening to her.
As for the murder mystery, I had no idea who the murderer was until the end! I loved being surprised. Highly recommend this novel to anyone that enjoys grounded detective driven stories.

Excellent story and engaging narrator

The main character is believable and very likable, and the storyline moves well and is engaging. I thought I had it figured out a couple times and ended up being surprised at the end. The narrator has a great voice that doesn’t take you out of the story, and has enough variety in voices that you can tell who is talking before you are told. Highly recommend.

Reader so bad I am giving up

I tried.... I really did.
I had to restart the whole book from around chapter 12 when I picked it up in the morning and was so irked I couldn't remember which character was which of bad voices.
The female protagonist is absolutely infuriating in the "someone who doesn't know women wrote this character" kind of way.
I give up. I tried to look past the teeth grindingly bad narration, and find the story I've heard good things about, but it's so bad I can't.
