Publisher's summary

This delightful and interesting account of the Pilgrims is written especially for children. It explores the religious oppression of the Pilgrims in England, their escape to Holland and eventual crossing to America on the Mayflower, and their early days in New England. Based on historical fact, the stories are filled with details of everyday life and vivid characterizations of Pilgrim families as they struggle to maintain their faith in the New World. The Brewster children and other Pilgrim boys and girls are the center of interest. This is a wonderful book to listen to in the weeks before Thanksgiving.

Fair portrayal of both sides

We enjoyed this historically accurate retelling of the stories of the pilgrims. There was no bias to either the pilgrims or the native Americans and simply told true stories of what happened. Narrator was excellent. Our entire family enjoyed listening to it on our trip to visit family for the Thanksgiving holidays. It kept my 7-year-old’s interest as well as my 13-year-old’s.

Fun Informative Story

This was a good story with some history scatter throughout. We enjoyed listing to this wonderful story over Thanksgiving break for our homeschool read aloud.

Great book when studying early American history

My boys (9 and 12) thoroughly enjoyed this historical account, and I love the many ways it shows God’s hand in the lives of the Pilgrims.

Family Road Trip

Complete silence from the back seat as my 7 year old and 2 year old listened intently. A perfect way to enter the month of November as we prepare for Thanksgiving festivities and our homeschool Thanksgiving projects.

Wonderful

We loved these stories! So, good and accurate, coming from primary sources like Bradford's journal.

Wonderful

I loved this story, and how it is historically accurate and tells the experiences of children in the colony

Whitewashing.

I felt the stories were historical and informative but only if you are interested in one perspective. I felt Native Americans overall were negatively portrayed and language such as “savages” is racist. The stories could have been done in a way that told the experience of the Pilgrims without putting down the Natives. I would recommend stopping after the Pilgrims leave Holland. The North American accounts, in my opinion, are insensitive toward Native Americans. I think there are better ways to learn history. I also thought the performance was so-so. I don’t recommend especially for young impressionable minds.

Wildly in accurate

The book was written in 1912, so it makes sense, but it was definitely offensive to Native Americans by portraying them all to be either drunk or stupid. If you let your kids read this, I would at least talk to them about how that was in accurate and how it was in negative belief at the time.
