About this listen

"Go into the Red Zone. Go to Street Freaks," his father directs Ashton Collins before the vid feed goes suddenly silent. The Red Zone is the dangerous heart of mega-city Los Angeles; it is a world Ash is forbidden from and one he knows little about. But if he can find Street Freaks, the strangest of aid awaits - human and barely human alike. As Ash is hunted, he must unravel the mystery left behind by his father and discover his role in this new world.

Critic reviews

"[Narrator Simon] Vance sinks his teeth into this futuristic, action-punk, dystopian story. His reading is perfectly timed, shifting seamlessly between emotion and narrative, street racing and corporate espionage. Vance's flawless performance keeps listeners riveted by the bulls-eye painted on Ash." (AudioFile)

Once again this great story teller takes us to a world that’s totally believable , yet completely different from our own. The characters are cast offs from that society, but so well written, that they become our temporary family. My only regret is that this appears to be a stand alone book, and not part of a series. Thank you, Terry, for taking me away from the troubles of my everyday world.

Terry Brooks does it again!

I've always enjoyed the authors Shannara series but this book is very disappointing. It's very juvenile and predictable, basically written for young teens. The main character questions his every thought and action throughout the whole book. It's the worst Terry Brooks book I've ever read.

Disappointing...

Good book. Different take on life in the future. Interesting and entertaining. Younger audience is the aim but at 36 I had a good time.

Pretty good. I'd read it again.

Interesting characters and compelling story line. Maintains a good pace to keep your interest without feeling like a race to the end of the book.

I was pleasantly surprised. Kept my attention with quite a few new fantasy props. Though I mostly despise coming-of-age tales, I enjoyed this one. Well done.

surprising good book

Once again Terry Brooks has written a truly enjoyable book with undertones of truth of what is happening today. Simon Vance does a great job at narration.

Wonderful Story

Taking a break from the genre he has dominated for 40 years...Terry has spun a fascinating tale of intrigue set in a dystopian future. From the very first minutes, the story grabs you and drags you into a high speed chase that never ends as his protagonist struggles to untangle the mystery of his fathers desperate last message.

Another Brooks Masterpiece

I have been reading Terry Brooks for 30 years. The amount of swearing in his novel really surprised me as it is not his usual clean no swearing no sex good writing.
I really liked the book but it could be cleaner.

Swearing not like Terry
