About this listen

Here in his first non-Shannara novel, Terry Brooks has written a gripping story of mystery, magic, and adventure - sure to delight fantasy listeners everywhere.

Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement has promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention.

The kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize a king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything.

Ben's only followers were the incompetent court magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as court scribe; and the lovely Willow - but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor.

To put the final touch on the whole affair, Ben soon learned that the Iron Mark, terrible lord of the demons, had challenged all prospective kings of Landover to duel to the death - a duel which no human could hope to win.

The task of proving his right to be king seemed hopeless. But Ben Holiday was stubborn....

I really enjoyed this story. It took a few chapters to get into, but once I did I thoroughly enjoyed the work building and characters.
It is an almost complete story, and you could stop after book 1 if you wanted. There are no big cliffhangers at the end, just one looming thought about Meeks.

Great story and narration

I very pleasantly found myself lost in the story as it unfolded. Terry Brooks takes magical concepts with which we are all familiar and turns them around in very interesting ways, leading to infinite opportunities! These are great characters with a lot of potential for future growth and adventures. Some surprising twists and turns kept me engaged. Jeremy Arthur is a favorite narrator and I'm so glad I chose this story based on that and a recommendation from a friend!

Magical adventure with great narration!!

I enjoyed the narrators ability to switch between voices, especially Philip and Sot.
The story was well told, with the same feelings I had when I read it over 30 years ago.

An Old Friend

I’ve waited so long for the audible version to come out! Great story, great voice work (except for the dragon). A fairy tale with a modern day twist, this story explores
the basis of friendship, truth and commitment.

Finally!!!

This book was a favorite of mine as a child, purchased in the audio version on a whim with high hopes. It is very well done and I'm so glad I made the decision to try the audiobook version. The narrator is very good, I particularly enjoy his voice for The wizard. looking forward to the rest of the series in the audio version very much. highly recommend!

I've read almost all of Terry Brooks series and have thoroughly enjoyed each new series. This was the first one of his stories I've listened to, however, and I must say the narrator did an excellent job; thoughts and emotions were beautifully conveyed, and he slipped seamlessly between characters and voices.

The narrator will make or break any audio book

This is one of my favorite series. I always worry I will enjoy the narrator or not. I thought Jeremy Arthur did a wonderful job.

Please do more of the kingdom of Landover

I loved going back into this world after 30 plus years and experiencing it all over again in audio. Just as good as I remembered and I was swept up into Ben's story and his journey into the magic kingdom of Landover.
Jeremy Arthur was the perfect choice to bring this story into audio. He was absolutely fantastic and I'm looking forward to listening to him in the rest of the series!

What a delight!

The reader had an excellent voice and captured the essence of the characters and what I would have imagined their voices would have been like.
