Publisher's summary

It's been around nine long months since the United States spiraled into chaos due to a cascading systems failure. The die-off everyone predicted has begun and after a hard winter nearly every other house sits empty with the owners dead or unaccounted for. Lately the power has flickered on and off a few times, raising hopes that power restoration is coming soon.

But how do you put the genie back in the bottle? Violence is everywhere. Disease is rampant. Hundreds of thousands are dead. Insurance can never pay for the damage and loss that has occurred. The economy will take years to restore, if it can be restored at all.

From the recesses of a fractured government comes a plan to restore order and rescue what remains of the population. The first step comes with restoring power. But what if having access to electricity came at such a price that many - like Jim Powell, his friends, and his neighbors - would rather face a future in the dark.

Fences Vs Real Understanding

The more I get to know Him, to understand his motivations, the more I like him. He is a man of action, protective and strong. I don't know why, but that's how I picture Kevin Pierce the narrator...I guess that's why I appreciate anything he reads so very much. His mother, Nana, reminds me of those whose lives have been sooo full of good things, that they have little to no tolerance for the very thought of something bad happening. People like that tend to think they know what's best for everyone else, and that they can legislate human behaviour if they put up enough legal fences. Like legislating salt usage because some people have health problems from overuse...now, because our brains need salt, brain injuries have skyrocketed!! SMH, unfortunately, because they don't know much about how the victims of so-called unacceptable behavior cope, learn and grow OR that victimizers "benefit" from those legislated fences, they often become "collaborators" during hard times. Law-abiding folks become "chained" by the legal fences. Those that don't follow the law couldn't care less about the legal fences...in fact, victimizers love those fences because fences keep those they want to victimize all in 1 place, at 1 time, with too few guardians to protect them. It's like having hundreds of sheep without horns or even a few Rams alongside 50+ chickens with maybe 1 rooster all fenced into the same area, expecting 1 dog to watch ALL of them 24/7. Lambs are going to get loose or hide where they aren't noticed, while chicks are small enough to get out and run several directions. There's only 1 dog who has to eat, sleep/rest sometimes and physically can't be 4-5 different places all at 1 time. Something's going to get eaten, something injured, and if a wolf pack comes, even the overwhelmed dog will be attacked. These humans, like Nana, don't understand that unrestricted authority is often abused!!

The fact that this story brings out such strong reactions in me shows just how well written it is. Starting the next book now!!

Another great story

Franklin Horton continues to out do himself from one book to the next. Excellent addition to The Borrowed World series and Kevin Pierce continues his excellent narration work.

good book seemed to lag a bit

I really like the author and the way he tells stories through words. although I felt this book was an attempt to continue the story it did seem to be dragging out out. I did enjoy the book just seemed to have to much filler.

Liked Book 6, didn't love it

This book was good, but it seemed too clinical. It was kind of a step by step directions how to kick butt and take names later. I will still wait with excitement for book 7. And there's plenty of action, heartwarming scenes, too; but this one's not my favorite in the series.

Nonstop and engrossing

This series just gets better with each book. Kevin Pierce had his work cut out and he delivered a perfect narration.

The Valley. The USA. Are we both here now?

This is an amazing story and while I know it is fiction I have to wonder, are the circumstances of our nation today very far from here. Is our country today on the cusp of civilization breakdown. We are so principly divided as a nation between those that want to believe in the benevolence of a government hungry for power and control, and those who wish to hang on to our constitutional rights to freedom of speech, arms and the ability to provide for ourselves. This story shows powerful parallels and makes you wonder where we will end up.

I pray that our nation never sees this level of betrayal by our government but who knows where truth really lies? Pun fully intended.

I can't wait to listen to book 7. To hear what treacherous circumstances befall Jim, his family and all the residents of the Valley next. I hope they will finally find some peace. But then again that would just be a boring story.
