Publisher's summary
A frozen lake…Cold-Blooded Murder.
A powerful man is found dead in his fish house on a frozen Minnesota lake, murdered, stabbed to death. His employees, family, and the local sheriff, all seem happy to have him gone - all except his personal assistant. With his death she is now forced to do something she thought she would never have to do, reveal secrets that will destroy the careers and lives of many - including a man set on being the next governor of the state.
Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Agent Danny Carlisle has been given the assignment, her first as a lead agent, and she and her partner soon find they have too many suspects and too little evidence. But someone is doing them a favor, narrowing down their list of suspects by killing them off. The snow and bodies in Duluth accumulate, and Carlisle's boss is pushing her to find who is doing the killing, someone who seems to know her every move.
“A great mystery read, indeed!” – Thomas La Roche

Kidnappers grabbed Jenna in broad daylight, right in front of her children and their horrified classmates. Her family was issued an insane ransom demand: $25 million in cash and jewels, payable by the end of the school day, otherwise they’ll never see her again. As Jenna’s mother scrambles to gather the money, detectives Mo Butler and George Ortega follow the trail of the kidnappers, which will lead them through a sordid landscape of jealous lovers, broken dreamers, and twisted schemers. But every second counts, and there’s one thing Jenna Wade doesn’t have: very much time.

It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Three dead. Shot point-blank. A hot summer day just got hotter. Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Agent Doc Hunter had a golf game scheduled. Doc was a good golfer. Very good. Thinking about going pro. But now all of that had been put on hold because three people on a farm got themselves shot and Hunter's boss had decided he needed to be the one to investigate. Big money. Sunken treasure. Drugs. And a trail of bodies, very clean bodies. The Trask brothers have their hands full. It was the chance of a lifetime for the band, touring with Prince, and a friend of a friend had a decked out tour bus they could use. Things couldn't be better - except for the body in the bus. A very clean body. Don Trask, Lead Agent for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, finds it odd that someone would go to the trouble to bleach a body. It was strange. And things were about to become even more strange when additional bodies in Minneapolis and along the north ...

Story
In the beginning, Isaac West stole to give his younger sister Janelle little things: a new sweater, a scarf, just so she looked less like a charity case whose mother spent money on booze and more like the prep school girls he'd see on his way to school. But when Isaac's petty theft lands him in juvie, he's cut off from helping Janelle. Friendless in a dangerous world of gangs and violent offenders, he must watch his every step.

Virtual voice
Virtual voice cadence was awful. It was distracting and made the story hard to listen to. I will avoid others with a virtual voice.

good good storyline but AI narration leaves a lot to be desired
The storyline is good but the virtual voice narration is not. The lack of inflection and also the lack of recognition of word pronunciation is definitely off-putting.

Voice narrator is distracting
For the most part, the AI narrator does a good job. However, there are times when the inflection and cadence are really far off and then it takes a few seconds to figure out what she is trying to say.
Just finished and I’m not a fan. Everyone’s voice sounds the same, no drama, no pregnant pause, just flat. Maybe this would work best for textbooks.
