About this listen

When four college kids are buried alive and there’s only one way out, don’t ask questions. Just survive.

After barely escaping a torturous series of undiscovered tunnels far beneath the Sierra foothills, Mae and her friends emerge, dehydrated and nearly dead from starvation.

But everything Mae knows and loves is now gone.

Through some bizarre tangle in time, they’ve been reeled back into the past. To a time that, according to Mae - “is constipated with antiquated gender inequality.”

With danger lurking behind every tree and no easy way home, they must begin adapting to their new surroundings before it’s too late. So, when struck with an unexpected opportunity, Mae is faced with the difficult choice of returning to her own time or living out the greatest adventure of her life and carving her own path in history.

Gin Westcott’s debut novel is the first in the unique Tangle of Time series that will take you through an exciting, historical, and romantic adventure that you won’t be able to put down.

I LOVE this book! Brilliant storytelling.

This story held my attention and took my imagination on a thrilling ride of time travel, whimsical twists and turns and enlightening historical drama. I felt deeply fond of the main characters and were cheering for them along the way. Every chapter brought a new adventure for these time travelers. I read a lot of books and I would definitely rank this as one of the TOP 5 I have ever read. This is a book NOT to be missed on your reading list. I can not wait until book 2 comes out...

History, culture, great characters, quirky laughs

I didn't know this was only BOOK ONE so I'm warning you all. But after finishing this first book, I am thrilled that I don't have to say goodbye to the characters that I learned to love. I am a huge fan of 19th century historical fiction and loved this book. The author kept the story light even though some of the things that were happening would be serious. I never knew this part of California's history and loved how it just flowed easily into the story. So clever how the author blended the past without worldbuilding info dumps. The modern characters who get stuck back in time are hilarious to read as they try to wrap their heads around their new antiquated life. The main character gets separated from her boyfriend and they try everything to find him before attempting to get back home to their time. But when they find something that could change all their lives, that's when the story gets really really good. Parts of the book were fast paced and parts were calm and sweet. A beautiful balance for a story like this. Gin Westcott is an excellent writer and her style is full of personality.

Impressively researched, well told story

The author has done a fantastic job of blending California history, interesting characters and good story telling. If you are looking for a great story of young people displaced into the past and trying to cope with all that entails, this is the book you want.I look forward to many more to follow it.

An absolute adventure - can’t wait for the next book in this series!

I tend to be more of a non-fiction reader, but I thoroughly enjoyed this story since there was so much interesting historical fiction. The author has a knack for descriptive imagery and action scenes that draw you in so much that you end up reading for an extra hour on accident! There are a range of character personalities, from whimsical and comedic to deeper, more complex narratives - so there’s something for everyone. The end of this book leaves you on the edge of your seat, wanting nothing more than to know when the next one will be released. Great book, would recommend 10/10!

Not sci-fi time travel but more historic

This wasn't just a time travel novel, it was so much more. I didn't expect it to take the twists and turns it did but it made my reading experience so much better than a typical historical fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed how the modern characters interacted with the people of the past and how they learned to deal with and without things and people in their new world. Though a debut novel for this author, she is an excellent writer and definitely did her research. I wish this was a required reading for California history because it was the last thing from boring and I came away with a new look on how California was formed. There were a dozen places where I had to laugh out loud with what the character Toke said. But all the characters were very flushed out and I hope book two is around the corner. The narrator pulled off a realistic Scandinavian accent and seemed the perfect voice for this story.

Fantastic. Can’t wait for book 2

Nice entertaining book. Not a lot of useless filler. Love the history since been on the same field trips and locations.
