Publisher's summary

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes changed crime fiction forever and helped launch not just a popular character but an enduring legend who is just as loved today.

This audio book was narrated in London by experienced British stage actor Robert Maskell at a voice recording studio renowned for high production values.

The stories were originally featured not in a book at all, but were written as installments in a London magazine called The Strand.

Penned as always from the point of view of the ever-loyal Dr. Watson, these concise tales shed early light on Sherlock Holmes' analytical genius.

Throughout the 12 stories we see Holmes at his incisive and eccentric best. All groups within Victorian society feature, from European aristocrats to travelling Gypsies, mad doctors to innocent ladies. These are truly classic stories and a perfect introduction to the fascinating world of Sherlock Holmes.

The stories are presented in order that they were originally published:

  • 1 A Scandal in Bohemia
  • 2 The Adventure of the Red-Headed League
  • 3 A Case of Identity
  • 4 The Boscombe Valley Mystery
  • 5 The Five Orange Pips
  • 6 The Man with the Twisted Lip
  • 7 The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
  • 8 The Adventure of the Speckled Band
  • 9 The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
  • 10 The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor
  • 11 The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet
  • 12 The Adventure of the Copper Beeches

A most singular audiobook...

What did you love best about The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes?

There are several singular points about this audiobook and I would not have missed it for a good deal. 'The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle', 'The Man with the Twisted Lip' and 'The Boscombe Valley Mystery' are, in particular, highly memorable pieces and among the better Sherlock Holmes stories I have read.

Would you be willing to try another book from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? Why or why not?

Four of the twelve stories within this volume were later selected by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to be among his favourite Sherlock Holmes stories. This collection is an excellent launchpad for somebody to begin exploring some of the longer stories by the author.

What does Robert Maskell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Several times I forgot I was listening to one narrator performing all the characters. Maskell's expressive abilities, perhaps also his vocal range, have allowed him to perform conversations taking place between Watson, Holmes and female client characters. That much of the dialogue is unassigned does not matter because Maskell is able to convincingly and immersively voice differentiated characters. Many of the women are given high and breathy treatments by the narrator but these are nuanced and avoid caricature.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I found it appealing to listen to a story or two in a sitting.

I love these stories of Sherlock Holmes, and the narration by Robert Maskell is spot on. He's great voice actor that is perfectly at home with the Holmes saga. Good enough to be revisited over and over.

Elementary

Any additional comments?

Sherlock Holmes has always been on my radar, but I never read any of the actual books, only excerpts or shows. This is much more and worth the listen. Doyle created a great character and you almost feel like you should have known some of those clues. The narrator was amazing.

Thoroughly Enjoyable Version of these Classics

I really enjoyed these stories. I had not before read or heard them all and they were all first rate tales of Sherlock Holmes at his best. The Man with the Twisted Lip is the only one that I guessed right away. All the others took me well into the story to get a bead on the real culprit. My favorites were A Scandal in Bohemia because of the ending, The Adventure of the Red-Headed League and the Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb largely due to the impeccable narration, and the Adventure of the Beryl Coronet because of the outcome.

Robert Maskell really does an excellent rendition of these stories. His tone, speed, and cadence and the way he reads the exciting parts are really unsurpassed. And his voices are beyond compare. At times, I forgot only one person was narrating!

Holmes is back in British voice

Well written and read collection of Holmes stories. It's always great to hear Holmes in a proper British accent. Forever in my kind will be the voice of basil rathbone and Nigel Bruce. But this one is an admirable performance. Highly recommend.I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
