Compact Science Fiction

4.5 out of 5 stars

I went into this one pretty blind. I saw the cover and I remember reading part of the synopsis when I posted it in my New and Notable post a couple of weeks ago. Going into it knowing that Scott Brick narrated it honestly put it up a couple of pegs in my eyes. I knew that it was going to be a great narration – I just hoped that the story was going to hold up.

And, boy, the story did hold up. Khalifa really took his 60 pages (around an hour audiobook) and ran with them. This was a short story that had a full story arc in it. The Ark didn’t really leave anything hanging out there (except to leave it a bit open ended so that you can finish it in your mind). The reveals and shocking parts of the book were just that. I didn’t see them coming at all and that’s pretty impressive in such a short medium.

A.M. Khalifa’s storytelling was on full display here – really shining in my opinion. The Ark didn’t hold back any punches. I honestly kept getting I, Robot (the movie) feelings while reading this and having really enjoyed that movie – that wasn’t a problem for me.

Free will, we all have it.

This is a classic tale of the creator losing sight of why they created, and later finding that the essence of creation is release. What is free will? There is no answer here, just an exploration of the lengths we will go to to find out. It is a cautionary tale. Enjoy!
