About this listen

Book 10 in the Gaunt's Ghosts series.

Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt returns with the Tanith First to a world that he promised to save, only to find that years of war and the ever-present taint of Chaos may have damaged it beyond redemption.

Listen to it because....

It's a triumphant return to Gereon. Gaunt promised to liberate the planet from the forces of Chaos, and now he's back to keep his word. But as is ever the way for the Tanith, tragedy will be mingled with triumph as the war on Gereon grinds on...

The story:

Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt spent a year fighting as part of the underground resistance on the enemy-held world of Gereon. When he left, he promised that he would bring the forces of the Imperium to liberate Gereon's citizens from their oppressors. Now he has returned, a crusade army at his back, but he finds a world devastated by war and a people irrevocably damaged by the taint of Chaos. Now Gaunt must fight to save Gereon not only from the enemy, but from the Imperium itself.

Fantastic read!

It's a great addition to an already awesome series! There's something in here for every 40K fan: big cataclysmic battles, small intimate fights, and different imperial machinations going with and against each other. Zero complaints with author or reader!

Well made

This was brilliant. It truly shows the meat grinder mentality of the normal Guard Grunts. Meat to be thrown against a metal wall until it breaks. Puts it in perspective really.

I would give it 1 star because of reasons...

I would give it 1 star because of reasons you will find out reading it and how heart wrenching it is. but it's still such a good book. seeing a return of the dynamic we once enjoyed and a completely new perspective was awesome. A triumphant return to such an important setting that is integral to the Ghosts we know today is awesome. Even the heart break. awesome.

Listen to the book.

Toby Longsworth and Dan Abnett are heros of the black library. All Hail their return and may we pray for them to return again soon.

These really do just get better and better

While Gaunt's Ghosts is the most recommended series of WH40k media, many seem to read the first two or three and call it good. A lot of people are missing out when it comes to these later novels, as Abnett has really hit his stride by this point. The ease at which he writes these characters and the conviction that Toby Longworth voices them with shine through and transform the material from just another episode of a pulp war story to a harrowing, emotional exploration of duty, family, honor and all that good stuff. Possibly my favorite of these so far, next to Sabbat Martyr. And gotta say, love when Longworth gets many different accents to do as compared with something like Eisenhorn where he's doing comparatively fewer voices. It's great to immediately know who's talking because of a familiar lilt and cadence.

one of my favorite series

Haven't noticed any contraventions to the lore I know, or any plain filler really. narration is great, doesn't break my immersion in the story. story itself is familiar enough without being predictable. I do like the commissar Caine series a little better but that's only because it's a bit on the lighter side. definitely recommend the series.

Heartbreaking and brutally gritty

Dalin’s experience of the pure hell is a unique perspective in 40k writing and an absolute must read. Abnett & Longworth really make you feel the heartbreak in Merrts story when he shares it with Dalin. So much to say about he and Caffrans relationship as well.

Love the return to Gareon. Wish we could have gotten more of the resistance story, but the two sided nature of this book was really really well done. The message of we all do what we need to do to survive, and how those costs can be extreme was powerful.

Best series in 40k. Can’t wait for the next one!
