almost thrilling

What made me keep listening to the story more than anything is the voice of Kitty Hendrix. Great nuances, pitches, and the way she portrayed the feelings of each character and situations they found themselves in is remarkable. The story is thrilling, every time my heart turned to its normal pace there was a twist in the story to make it beat fast again. I find it quite unbelievable that Meg, the main female character, learns to survive and do the things she did in such a short time, but I give her the benefit of the doubt. She is intelligent and strong, I loved her perseverance and drive to uncover the truth and close the case which was the cause of her husban's death, she wins despite the deadly obstacles thrown in her path. I like happy endings and there is a hint of that at the end.
Would I listen to another of Mr. Weston's books? Most likely, if Ms. Hendrix is the narrator.

Unexpectedly left feeling unsatisfied & irritated

I'm in a bit of a quandary with the Assassin's Wife, I really wanted to like it and had read some great reviews that suggested it was going to be five stars all the way. The synopsis sounded stimulating; an innocent women betrayed by the man she loved, forced into journey of destiny as a wanted fugitive, valiantly battling the hidden forces of evil in a bid to save not only herself but the planets ecosystem, sound rather good doesn't it?

Unfortunately it was just too “silly” (having or showing a lack of common sense or judgement; absurd and foolish) to be even remotely believable, I know its fiction but come on, training yourself as a weapon wielding ninja survivalist by watching a couple of videos! And didn't she go on about being lied to, you really would have thought that someone who was that mistrusting of just about everyone would have been a better judge of character. It was also fairly ironic that this individual so consumed with a need truth and honesty ends up living her life lying about who she is and where she comes from with the ease of a politician.

I guess what’s even more frustrating is that even with all these issues I still actually enjoyed the book. It was helped along by some outstanding narration by Kitty Hendrix, who gave the book a graphically stimulating atmosphere, providing colour to the characters and with perfect pitch, pace and passion provided the listener with a most pleasurable experience from start to finish.

Mr Weston does provide a fast paced, all action narrative that sweeps the reader along in a series of enthralling situations, regrettably some of them were resolved in a way that makes no sense at all. The beguiling Meg Coles displays a naivety that inexplicably infects those apparently rational comrades who have come to her assistance and left me wanting to give them all a massive ‘wake up and smell the roses’ slap in the mug.

I definitely won’t be reading this one again and won’t be suggesting anyone else does but I would like to have a listen to some of Mr Weston’s other work, as he provided sufficient encouragement & incentive for me to believe in him as an author.

A Good Thriller

The Assassin’s Wife: A Thriller was an interesting listen. Meg and Eric Cole are spending a week in their cabin when Meg sees her husband carrying a coffin-shaped box to the shed and acting suspicious. She didn’t like being lied to and felt that he was hiding something from her. About that time the phone rang and it was for Eric. He said it was Len Ackerman and that there was a problem with one of their properties in Seattle but she knew it wasn’t his voice.

While sleeping that night Meg hears the floor creaking ever so quietly and notices that Eric isn’t in bed with her. A strange man is looming over her and bullets begin to fly. Eric is killed but has time to give her instructions on what to do before he passes. He tells her he isn’t who she thinks he is. He tells her to go to their nearest neighbor and friend, Bill Hagerman and have him take her to Lomax. Upon arriving at Hagerman’s with the box in tow, Bill isn’t there but rather a man named Neil, claiming to be Bill’s brother. Meg learns that now she’s in a fight for the truth and for her life but she has to follow the instructions that Eric has left on a DVD or she’ll be killed. She has to become an assassin.

I felt the story was a good thriller but could have been an edge of your seat thriller. Where it fell short for me was the believable factor. There were several scenes that would be impossible such as Meg lugging around a large box filled with $7 million in cash. Another instance was when Meg went to see the man her husband instructed her to see and in order to prove who she was, she had to tell him the name of her favorite play. Lastly, it began to feel redundant when the author kept reiterating the fact that Meg was a drama professor. The story was good, however I felt that the author rushed it by leaving out key details that would have made the story more cohesive.

About the narrator: Kitty Hendrix did a wonderful job as always with her performance. She has good character differentiation. Her voice inflections were very good and it was paced perfectly. Her tone was just right for Meg and I feel that she was the saving grace of this story. Overall I would recommend listening to this audiobook for a good thriller.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave

“Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.”

Eric Coles was dead, shot by a sniper. He died in Meg Coles arms. His last words telling her he was sorry, he wasn’t who she thought he was, and to get the wooden box and run for her life. Meg is now on the run with Neil, her neighbors brother(?). During the next few days she will become a fugitive. Someone very powerful is behind the murder and the attempts on her life. She quickly learns not to trust anyone but the people Eric told her to.

There was a lot of action in this story. It bounced around the upper northwest part of the states and even into Alaska. I checked up on some of the places mentioned and they were there. I really liked the Snake River and Hell’s canyon parts. It’s just as Weston stated. The one problem I had with the whole plot was that Meg, a drama professor with no gun or fighting talents, watched a video Eric left for her and was an instant Superwoman. Also, that she got into fights and just bounced back up and overcame the professional assassins. Just a little hard to believe. I’m not saying I didn’t like the book,
I did, but I did.

It started at the top of the rollercoaster, took off, and never let up. I started this audio book in the morning and finished in the evening. Just loved the audio. With the right reader you can live the action with the characters, and did Ms. Kitty ever deliver. Just loved the way she told this story. Her voice was clear and articulate. Brought them to life, it was fantastic.

I thought the cover was right on. The best action was on the river.

Fun Story of with a Strong Female Character

What made the experience of listening to The Assassin's Wife: A Thriller the most enjoyable?

Overall the narration is what made this book fun. The story had some inconsistent parts that at time pulled me out of the suspension of disbelief, for instance when she would use military terms when just a while ago she was a housewife. That being said, the narration is topnotch and the overall concept of a strong female character is entertaining.

I loved this book! One of the better audio books I have read, the action packed story and the narrators ability to distinguish between characters made this book memorable.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Assassin's Wife: A Thriller?

The best moment was when heroine Meg Coles realizes that there are truly bad people and that her husband wasn't the villain she thought when she found out his true proffesion.

Which character – as performed by Kitty Hendrix – was your favorite?

I loved the husband, as seen through Meg's memories, thoughts, and actions.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Always the unexpected..
