About this listen

There is something lurking in the trees....

A winter storm has buried North Dakota in snow and ice. With accidents being reported across the region, Deputy Ron Weller must patrol along the main road through a normally tranquil forest in Beeman County. The night grows menacing as he discovers vehicles that have been run off the road, their drivers mysteriously missing. Strange tracks lead through a region of thick forest known as Devil's Rock. There, Weller makes a horrifying discovery.

A monster has awakened. Its hunger is insatiable, and its ferocity has no limits.

Protected by an armored exoskeleton, the beast is relentless in its pursuit of prey. It must feed or face starvation. What has started as a search for a missing driver has now become a fight for survival, as Ron Weller is hunted by the Beast of Devil's Rock.

Action

So much action from the very start of the book. I couldn’t put it down.

A fun monster story

A straightforward thrill ride of survival. Nothing deep or mind boggling. A good poolside read/listen if you like monster stories.

Great!

Loved it, generally enjoyed the banter, deeply horrified by the thought of the captured people in suspension waiting, painfully for the spiders return to finish them off!

The Beast of Devil's Rock

I enjoyed the writter's telling of the story and the creature. The reading of the story was not to my personal choice as the reader's voice changes to differentiate the characters made the police sound like different "Barney" characters from Andy Griffith. I would still recommend this story as it was a good story with lots of terror filled action!

Just what I want in a creature feature

I have decided, when I am in the mood for a creature feature, Michael Cole is the author for me. This man knows how to write an "animal attacks" book. I have read two of his books now, and I have found that they are the perfect blend of horror and action. There is just enough humor and drama to make the characters likable and give you a little information about who they are and what is at stake for them. I also find that his books are long enough to be satisfying, but they don't drag on.

Some unexpected things that I absolutely loved about The Beast of Devil's Rock:
1) I did not know what the monster was, despite the cover giving me an obvious clue, but yeah, this creature is "the thing" of nightmares. I already have a phobia of this animal in normal sizes, but giant-sized...*shudder* This is to say that the horror was very effective.
2) These characters are just regular cops. They are not Gary Stus with God-like plot armor and Special Forces capabilities. These are regular guys who are using what knowledge they have from law enforcement, hunting, living in wooded areas, etc, to try and defeat their foe.
3) That said, these guys are not naive and annoying teenagers with no life skills either. In these types of books, a lot of times, you get teenagers or college students out in the middle of nowhere but only one of the young people will actually have any skills. It is just frustrating because it makes them too helpless to root for, as they make ne dumb decision after another. It is refreshing to have capable but not overpowered protagonists.
4) I loved the banter between these characters. I was raised around cops. My dad was a cop for nearly sixteen years, and this book is accurate when it comes to how cops interact with one another. They love to pick at one another but in a loving, fraternal way, and they often have a dark, gallows humor.
5) There is NO romance. Yay!!!! That is so rare. I don't mind romance. I read the genre, but romance in certain types of books just feels shoehorned in a lot of times, and it takes away from the pace of the book. When it comes to creature features, I would prefer no romance.

The only reason this is not a five-star book is because I did not have time to really care about most of the characters. There was one death that got me though. I had to put the book down for a bit as a sort of moment of silence for him.

Thank you, Michael Cole for delivering exactly what I want in a creature feature! I will definitely be reading more of your books in the very near future.

Short monster story

This monster story could have been twice as long with more history and more present-day trouble. Instead, you come into the story the same times the characters do. You keep wondering what the town or county missed going on in their woods instead of following the story. I listened to the end twice. The end was ok, but I still wanted more. I have another book by the same author and enjoyed that one so I went looking for more. I'll listen to this book again, but it could have been fleshed out.

unknown terror

characters seem so alive, you can feel their terror. The not knowing what's out there, can draw fear alone

It was okay

I did enjoy it but the cover does give away monster so no wondering. Also the childish behavior of the officers towards one another was a little much. The ending was rather abrupt too.
