About this listen

Horror is what Dan Law enjoys. He loves to read horror novels as a way to escape from his teaching job, from his loneliness, from the everyday dullness of life in Silver Lake. That’s what Dan lives for. When a new bookstore opens in town, every visitor receives a free book of their own. A book that tells their own personal story...a story they have to follow to the brutal end. As Silver Lake’s population descends into violent savagery, Dan finds he is no longer living for horror novels - he’s living inside one.

Listened to it 3 times just to make sure I caught everything. Love the voice acting, very soothing to listen to..

Twisty plot

I don't mean my title as insult, the story reminded me alot of Needful Things by Stephen King. It's like comparing name brand food and store brand, it's not as good, but it's not bad.

Generic Needful Things

The story is horror but the non horror parts have issues.. the second chapter has incomplete SA between minors. the male characters are nice guys, with all of the negative connotations that go with that modern definition. TW: intimate scenes described, blood and gore, violence against pets, pet gore, women aren't listened to when they say things like "no i dont want a ride home" and then the main character badgers her until she yells at him to stop.
This book is not written for women who have been abused or SA.
Be careful when reading.

not for everyone

Narrator made the story even better with his creepy voice. I wish it had a better ending though. Would recommend

Nice and creepy

I love the story, I love a creepy bookstore/library story! The narrator did a good job of voicing the characters, but the upturn question-like narration got on my nerves! Overall tho, I enjoyed it! Good read for free book!

Great story, narrator meh

The narrator sounds like AI with his unnatural inflection. And the characters kind of sounded like comical cartoon characters. The story itself was alright. A new bookstore owner gives away mysterious notebooks that only people they were given to can read. This creates chaos as people get obsessive about making their individual stories come true. It didn't seem all that scary or suspenseful. Mostly just gore and death.

Bland

so, I wasn't sure I was going to finish this at first. for me, personally, I'm not the biggest fan of humans perpetuating the horror. To me, it's a different sort of horror more akin to terror.

but, I am glad I stuck it out. there was one twist I really liked that maybe I shouldn't have, but hooo boy!

pretty gory, much horror

I was getting into the story having no idea what would happen next all the characters were well written but the ending was so disappointing and left me unfulfilled this book needs a follow up.

Story was good until the ending

Again Haynes takes a concept one might think corny and weaves it nicely into a really enjoyable story. If you like Ray Bradbury, particularly Something Wicked This Way Comes, you’ll really like this book.

Lots of classic references

This reminded me of Needful Things by Stephen King. Maybe way more than needed. But it was good.

Felt a bit like comfort
