This is a story from the Fall of the House of Usher collection. The horrors of the Spanish Inquisition, with its dungeon of death, and the overhanging gloom on the House of Usher demonstrate unforgettably the unique imagination of Edgar Allan Poe. Unerringly, he touches upon some of our greatest nightmares: Premature burial, ghostly transformation, words from beyond the grave. Written in the 1840s, they have retained their power to shock and frighten even now.

Story
Each story explores a different twist of madness, murder, and melancholy, from the horror of being buried alive in "The Fall of the House of Usher" to the desperate case of two gruesome killings in "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." The heartbeat of paranoia in "The Tell-Tale Heart," the razor-sharp claustrophobia in "The Pit and the Pendulum," and a mourner's torment in "The Raven" reveal - and revel in - life's creepiest and craziest. These tales are not for the faint of heart or the thin of skin.

Story
Edgar Allan Poe elevated the gothic story, developed the unreliable narrator, recast psychological terror, and reveled in both the horror and the supernal beauty of death. From Poe's rich, unrivaled imagination comes a collection of his most masterful works, including "The Black Cat", "The Fall of the House of Usher", and, of course, "The Tell-Tale Heart". Each story explores morbid themes of grief, greed, fear, and guilt, and together they embody Poe's grotesque obsessions...even the dread of being buried alive.

The Monk is a violent tale of ambition, murder, and incest. The great struggle between maintaining monastic vows and fulfilling personal ambitions leads the monk Ambrosio, into temptation and the breaking of his vows, then to sexual obsession and rape, and finally to murder in order to conceal his guilt. Written when Matthew Lewis was only 19, The Monk was criticised when first published in 1796 for its lewdness and impiety, but this criticism only added to its popularity.

Story
In the late seventies an extraordinary document came to light which for fifty years had been held on deposit by the bankers of the deceased John Herbert Watson MD - better known to devotees of Conan Doyle as Dr Watson. A continuous narrative in the doctor’s own hand, the story opens in the East End of London in 1888. Three women have been savagely murdered by Jack the Ripper.

One of the most important novels in classic literature, Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter tackles the subject of adultery, with the notorious Hester Prynne at the forefront of the scandal in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In the beginning of the novel, Hester is serving time in prison for having a child out of wedlock and is forced to wear a scarlet A on her clothing at all times, so she cannot run from her sin no matter where she goes.

Disturbing
I received this book for free at my request but the opinion is of my own. A man loves animals and making his wife happy until suddenly he starts to change. He starts acting different and consequences follow.

Short but Creepy
This is one of Poe's best in my opinion and having it read out loud really brings out the CREEPY. Kevin does an amazing job with this story. I highly recommend this book.

Classically Terrifying!
Kevin Theis was magnificent in his narration of this delightful story by the hauntingly talent of Edgar Allen Poe.
I also enjoyed the music and sounds in the background, which normally I abhor, but for a horror story of Edgar Allen Poe, it was necessary and made it uniquely terrifying and real.

Perfect short horror story
The Black Cat – Unabridged, By Edgar Allan Poe, Narrated by Kevin Theis
This is an Edgar Allan Poe nice short book. It is only 28 mins long. Short and easy to listen. This book is narrated by brilliant Kevin Theis. He gave all of this emotions in this book, so you can really enjoy the story as the listener. He uses his voice brilliantly and increases the tension as needed. This is a little bit of horror story which is enhanced by narrators voice and special effects. I usually do not listen to horror, but this was really refreshing and well done. Sound effects give the story an excellent contribution.
My hope is that this review helps in your decision whether to obtain this book.

Take a quick journey with a horror classic!
Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat gets the full Fort Raphael treatment and the added audio touches serve to fully deliver the horror! This is a bite-sized piece of Poe, but it's a good one. If you're a cat owner or cat lover especially, you'll understand exactly how the tale could end the way it does. Narrator Theis dives deep into the energy of the story and the misery of the teller of the tale. We're left shaking our heads at the twists and turns of the human mind -- and of Poe's for bringing this story to us. Highly recommended!

The sound effects
Twisted tale the makes the animal lover in me cringe. Poe knows where to strike his reader. I loved it. Thee sound effects of the wailing cat gave me the chills.

Why Do Some People Do Evil?
This short horror story seems to be about this subject. It's a very difficult story, and might be disturbing to some listeners, but I recommend it if you can stomach it.
The performance is excellent and very suited to Edgar Allan Poe. Having tried some of the other versions of this audiobook on Audible, I recommend this one.

Good one!
I had never been big on Edgar Allen Poe stories, though I have read a few and found some of them interesting. I had not heard this one, it was good! Narration is good! I feel like this is a time when a story should be told and not shown, that is what was done with background noise, making the story more alive.

Voice performance annoyed me
Story is fine but I felt the reader read it almost as he is standing in a theatre and trying to reach the back row. I also felt it was read too fast. I wanted to listen to this before bed as an atmospheric cozy chiller but I felt standing in front one of those paperboys in the street shouting "This just in!".
This performance is more suitable for a car drive while listening, but not to relax too.
