About this listen

Book 4: Paint It Black

In the fourth installment of The Black Knight Chronicles, Jimmy Black is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day and a darned fine pity party, serving the finest alcohol, when a call from his not-quite-girlfriend-cop forces him to sober up and stare at jawbones. "Cold case" takes on a whole new meaning when vampire detectives risk life and limbs (literally) to connect a series of decades-old kidnappings in Charlotte with current missing persons cases. All clues lead through the veil of Faerieland to the legendary Goblin's Market, a magical bazaar where anything is available--for a price. The boys can barely stay out of trouble in Charlotte. As fresh meat at The Market, they'll be lucky to survive the day.

Book 5: In the Still of the Knight

The bodies are piling up!Murders are happening outside Charlotte's hottest nightspots. A new vampire society has set up shop in the sewers. And Jimmy Black's about to run afoul of the Master of the City. If Jimmy weren't already a vampire, the week ahead would be the death of him. Between murder, monsters, pesky vampire ethics, and territorial disputes, Jimmy is about to discover how far he's willing to go to save the world and one friend's soul. There are no easy choices, even for vampire geeks.

Book 6: Man in Black

The latest book in the award-winning Black Knight Chronicles is a raucous ride through the city of Charlotte's seedy underbelly with the most unlikely crime lord ever. Jimmy Black's knack for stumbling into the right place at the wrong time has landed him his dream job--or worst nightmare--Master Vampire of the City. Almost everyone that works for him wants him dead. His best friend isn't speaking to him.

The boys are back in town, or are they?

Ok, as Urban Fantasies go this book is rock solid. I can tell you I came into the genre a little late, but I love it dearly. Yes, I've read all the Dresden Stuff by Butcher, Atticus by Kevin Hearne, Sanchez's Montague and Strong, Hunter's Yancy Lazarus, and even Sandman Slim just to name a few. There are many, many, many more, but none of them are like this series. This series is set apart by its style and humor. Hartness really does have a great sense of timing, and seems to always know what will and won't work.

This collection handles books 4 - 6, and there are one or two issues that I caught in the middle. Book five has one scene that says this happened, and then another scene completely contradicts the other. Not sure if that is editing or rewrites that caused that, but it was forgivable. Either way the stories all build up to a great cresendo, and poor Jimmy finds out that not being alive can be even more problematic than living or dying. Undeath sucks.

I will say That I like these covers (for the whole series) far better than those of the Bubba series (bet you thought I could go a whole review without mentioning Bubba, huh). The stries seem more cohesive, too. WIth Bubba it feels like a monster of the week overlaid onto a few planned out plot points that are set for the season. Here, the books all have a solid individual purpose, and a hidden overarching one as well. That really fits into the whole UF genre, and moves the characters ahead in a natural way.

Once again I will say that Russo does an amazing job. You can feel his enthusiasm for the piece, and hear how into character he becomes. I am impressed with how much effort he's put into making this seem effortless, and the sound quality is off the charts. I really could not ask for more in a series, or a narrator.

I really hope That John G. continues this series, and that we get a book 7 or 8 just for kicks and giggles. Now, if only Bubba would roll into town. . .

Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Good hood but I missed Greg and jimmy quirks back and forth but I felt that each came into their own. Loved it regardless.

So great I donated blood to a shady blood center..

Whie similar to typical 'modern vampire' lexicons (no need for invites to enter, varying strengths or weaknesses depending on sire ,etc), I found this very entertaining and the nearly nonexistent foul language was a breath of relief. The story wasnt soured by the prepubescent vernacular of a mouthy preteen. The series had its out-there moments but they were always reminding the reader,"this is cool and all but we got a mission to finish".Nick J. Russo is an excellent narrator and he overall did incredible , even if he made Bobby the Medical Examiner and Greg vocal twins.I hope to find more of John G. Hartness' writing especially on Audible.I wouldve given the series 6 stars of allowed!

A GREAT SERIES from Mr Hartness

I was initially thrown off by this series in the beginning but boy once you dig in and ride it is none stop action throughout. The narrator was excellent! Give it a shot. You won’t be wasting your time.
