About this listen

The Blue Castle is a novel full of humour and romance. It tells the story of a woman named Valency and her discovery of a new world of love and happiness. Valency escapes the clutches of her overbearing family and finds solace in her new friendships and new surroundings. This early work by L. M. Montgomery was originally published in 1926 .

Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on 30th November 1874, New London, in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. Her mother, Clara Woolner (Macneil), died before Lucy reached the age of two and so she was raised by her maternal grandparents in a family of wealthy Scottish immigrants. In 1908 Montgomery produced her first full-length novel, titled 'Anne of Green Gables'. It was an instant success, and following it up with several sequels, Montgomery became a regular on the best-seller list and an international household name.

The Blue Castle is a story of one woman who must find her inner strength. At 29 years old she is unmarried, and her family makes it very clear that it is because she is plain. Constantly compared to the other women in her family, who are prettier and more deserving of love, she is treated like her only role in life should be to support them. Valancy Sterling must find something in herself -- to find the courage to live her life for herself.

It's a quiet, simple book, without any significant surprises or plot points, but the message is clear. It is a book that reminds us to be kind, and when people are not kind to find kindness for ourselves. It is a hopeful book about love, and self-love. It is an uplifting, sweet story, and I am grateful to have read it.

a lovely story of personal growth

I thought I loved Anne and Emily, but nothing compares to Valency. Great production and story.

This is the best audio adaptation I’ve ever heard of my absolute favorite LM Montgomery novel. I very much enjoyed the narrator’s performance. She did justice to a beautiful book.

Great narrator

I've read every book LM Montgomery published and after the Anne Series, The Blue Castle is my favorite story. This was done incredibly well and I enjoyed it very much!

Terrific Audiobook!

the author slyly uses this book to rage against any religious person that offended her. The main character threw common sense out the windows yet lives happily ever after... very stupid and wrong book.

wicked and revels in demonizing christians
