About this listen

A "lush nightmare" (Paul Tremblay) of a supernatural thriller about a young woman facing down ancient forces in the depths of the bayou.

Ever since her father was killed when she was just a child, Miranda Crabtree has kept her head down and her eyes up, ferrying contraband for a mad preacher and his declining band of followers to make ends meet and to protect an old witch and a secret child from harm.

But dark forces are at work in the bayou, both human and supernatural, conspiring to disrupt the rhythms of Miranda’s peculiar and precarious life. And when the preacher makes an unthinkable demand, it sets Miranda on a desperate, dangerous path, forcing her to consider what she is willing to sacrifice to keep her loved ones safe.

With the heady mythmaking of Neil Gaiman and the heartrending pacing of Joe Hill, Andy Davidson spins a thrilling tale of love and duty, of loss and discovery. The Boatman's Daughter is a gorgeous, horrifying novel, a journey into the dark corners of human nature, drawing our worst fears and temptations out into the light.

Good story

I liked the story. weird and kinda creepy. I have to admit, I wasn't a huge fan of the performance, but that's maybe that's just me. If it looks interesting to you, I'd say to give it a try. enjoy.

Just Okay

The beginning was really hard for me to get into, had to listen about three times. Then, the middle gets really good -- incredible and atmospheric world-building. Then, the ending. I thought it went on too long, some of the dreamy realizations were anticlimactic, and I didn't understand why the villains were so powerful. Hm.

Take a ride

Wildly creative and intricate. Meanders through the story with such flowing lyrics that I sometimes had trouble keeping my mind from wandering, yet interesting enough so that I got mad at myself when I did let it wander.

Confusing story, great atmosphere

I enjoyed the book for it's dark, moody atmosphere that made me feel like I was in a swamp myself. To call it a southern Gothic book though is extremely misleading; it's straight up fantasy with folklore inspired demons, monsters, and magic. It's a great concept and I liked it once I figured out what it was going for, but it was not what I was expecting.

A bit of a mess

the start and last 1)3 of this novel were amidh-mash with too many characters added in half way through. The characters were not developed effectively. This novel would be much better with fewer characters that were better developed. More focus on substance instead of style would have created a much better story. Less dream sequences too!

memorable novel and great narration

this book kept me on the edge of my seat. it was quite gritty and some parts exhibited a brutality that reminded me of how the innocence of youth is often taken away by the "human" monsters that should be there to protect but are often the most dangerous and deceitful. the supernatural and magic elements provided a mysterious combination with the savagery of nature and gave a great balance to the evil of the antagonists of the story. the main characters are interesting as well, their humanity only amplified by their struggles to survive. overall great performance by the narrator, she had a conviction in her voice that had me wanting to see what happened next at every point of the story.
