Publisher's summary

Sweetbitter meets The Firm in this buzzy, pause-resisting debut novel - already optioned to Netflix - about sex and power in the halls of corporate America.

One of Buzzfeed's Most Anticipated Books of 2020, Cosmopolitan's Best Summer Reads of 2020, and the New York Post's 30 Best Summer Books.

Alex Vogel has always been a high achiever who lived her life by the book - star student and athlete in high school, prelaw whiz in college, Harvard Law School degree. Accepting a dream offer at the prestigious Manhattan law firm of Klasko & Fitch, she promises her sweet and supportive longtime boyfriend that the job won’t change her. Yet Alex is seduced by the firm’s money and energy...and by her cocksure male colleagues, who quickly take notice of the new girl. She’s never felt so confident and powerful - even the innuendo-laced banter with clients feels fun.

In the firm’s most profitable and competitive division, Mergers and Acquisitions, Alex works around the clock, racking up billable hours and entertaining clients late into the evening. While the job is punishing, it has its perks, like a weekend trip to Miami, a ride in a client’s private jet, and more expense-account meals than she can count. But as her clients’ expectations and demands on her increase, and Alex finds herself magnetically drawn to a handsome coworker despite her loving relationship at home, she begins to question everything - including herself. She knows the corporate world isn’t black-and-white and that to reach the top means playing by different rules. But who made those rules? And what if the system rigged so that women can’t win, anyway?

When something happens that reveals the dark reality of the firm, Alex comes to understand the ways women like her are told - explicitly and implicitly - how they need to behave to succeed in the workplace. Now, she can no longer stand by silently - even if doing what’s right means putting everything on the line to expose the shocking truth.

Reality

I hope this brings light and change to the injustices women encounter in the workplace.

Good, but not great

This is a well written (and superbly read) book, very credible in describing with insigth the dynamics of a major law firm. Very captivating at the begginning, but little by little the plot becomes erratic with no clear direction and meaning. Overall i enjoyed it, but was clearly disappointed at the end.

Couldn't put it down

Narrator was great, l love Julie Whelan she is one of my favorites. This was a great story, loved the characters. I could have told her not to trust Carmen, but she didn't listen to me yelling at this book. I couldn't believe the ending, with Gary winning the case. But Skippy was stronger than she thought she was. I really liked this book, will try reading another once by this author.

It was almost as if….she was telling MY story

This book hit me hard, as I was in a situation working for a company who entertained clients, just like they did in the book. And I ended up being assaulted by a coworker. It was awful and I dived into work to not think about it and that lasted until I just snapped one day and couldn’t function. The book basically told my story and it made me feel that I’m not alone. And I’m still working through my issues. Thank you for writing this book. I needed to hear the story and cry and release some of the pain that I’m still holding. And I liked her idea of doing something that will make a difference in this world with something positive in order to help your own recovery. But there are companies that do let this behavior slide and I think it’s awful. And I was told that I was the bad apple and I was forced to leave - but not the men with higher positions - they got to stay and continue doing all that awful stuff to new women. I do wish we could all do something to make this a better world to live in.

Interesting story

The story was interesting, even though the main character made tons of bad decisions. I liked learning about cooperate law firms.

Great book, not a fan of the end

I devoured this book and loved every second until the last 10% of the book. It was SO good and then it’s like the writer didn’t know how to end it. Strange. Of course, the narrator, Julia Whelan, was perfection. I love her!
Writer could use some input on how to wrap up a great book though. Definitely worth a credit.

Better than I expected!

Wow! This book was such a good story. Even the ending wasn’t what I wanted but at the same time I like how it ended realistically. And Julia Whelan is always the best.
