About this listen

I hope you don’t find him. And if you do, I hope he’s dead and that he suffered....

Real-estate mogul Martin Cresswell-Smith is the best thing that has ever happened to Ellie. After her daughter’s devastating death, a divorce, and an emotional breakdown, he’s helped her move as far as possible from the grief, the rage, and the monsters of her past. Ellie imagines her new home with Martin in an Australian coastal town will be like living a fairy tale. But behind closed doors is another story - one that ends in Martin’s brutal murder. And Ellie seems almost relieved....

Naturally, everyone thinks Mrs. Cresswell-Smith is guilty.

Senior Constable Lozza Bianchi has reasonable doubt. She sees evidence of a twisted psychological battle and a couple who seemed to bring out the worst in each other - adultery, abuse, betrayal, and revenge. If anything Ellie says can be believed, that is. As the case takes twist after spiraling twist, Lozza can’t shake the gut instinct that she’s being manipulated. That Ellie is hiding something. That there are secrets yet to surface. Lozza has no idea.

Critic reviews

“Convincing character development and a denouement worthy of Agatha Christie make this a winner. White has outdone herself.” --Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“This page-turner is tightly written with a moody sense of place in the small coastal community, but it is the numerous twists that will keep readers thoroughly absorbed. A satisfyingly creepy psychological thriller.” --Kirkus Reviews

“Perfect for fans of Ruth Ware, Sally Hepworth, or Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, In The Deep by Loreth Anne White is propulsive, chilling, and brilliantly plotted with a twist ending you’ll never see coming.” --The Nerd Daily

I really like it!

I was hesitant about getting this book based on some of the reviews.
It was a bit twisty for a short period, but I managed to hang on! And am so glad I did!
I don’t know that I LOVE the ending, but I thought overall, it was really good! It wasn’t slow and kept me interested.

FANTASTIC THRILLER

This is one of those books that is next level good. It’s excellent. Worth the credit and then some! I listen to a lot of Psychological thrillers and this one is top tier.

The narrator did a stellar job.

Spend the credit. Well worth it!!!

I just couldn't stop listening.

Each time I thought I knew who killed Martin Chriswell Smith the story would move in a different direction. The ending was surprising never thought it would go that way. Fantastically beautiful book

Excellent, complex characters on a thrill ride

First - I listened to this at 1.5 speed because it was WAY too slowly read for me. At 1.5 it was great. The performer did really well with accents but all the "type" of one character (i.e. male Australian) sounded the same. Solid 3 stars for performance.

The story is good. Really good. It's unclear exactly what is transpiring behind the scenes. I had some suspicions here and there but, damn, there are some real shocks. Realistic with nice dramatic flair. I really liked the story. It went quick (especially at 1.5) and was an easy read. I will certainly read Loreth AW in the future. Her ability to build suspense is quite good. This was a daily deal but having listened, it is well worth a credit IMO.

Four and a half, maybe 4 and 3/4!

The only thing that keeps this from being a solid 5 stars is the long, slow build. I nearly quit this book a few times, having only 30 minutes or less to devote to it at a time, but on a 3 hour drive to get my COVID-19 vaccination, the story really caught hold of me. All the complicated backstory is *completely* necessary and totally worth it. Narrator Sarah Zimmerman nails it with her wonderful ability to slide in and out of an Aussie accent, and wisely never attempts a Canadian one. An intriguing mystery with more twists than a bowl of rotini! Wait for it!

Excellent in Every Way

So good. Vibrant, memorable characters brought to life with excellent narration. And the story - a courtroom drama told in alternating timelines and POVs. Did not see the twist coming, and when it came, I was like — I need to listen to that again!!! Saved hitting you with the best shot until the very end, as all good thrillers should do.

I wasn’t bothered by having a single narrator for multiple perspectives - Ms. Zimmerman did a great job, including nailing the accents.

Great Book Made Better By Narrator

This was one of the best Audio Books I’ve listened too. Hard to believe all these terrific Aussie accents were done by a single narrator!

Good ending

it took a long time to get into this story and it's best is in the last hour. not sure it was worth that much of a wait but I did enjoy the twists at the end.

Very good mystery novel

This was the first book I have read by this author and I was not disappointed. I purchased this as a daily deal and really didn’t know what to expect. However I found that I thoroughly enjoyed this engrossing murder mystery. The story is told from different points of view and it keeps the reader guessing. I doubt that many will be able to guess how the story ends. The story moves quickly and keeps the reader involved and the narration is very good. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy mysteries and thrillers.
