About this listen

The golden skies, the translucent twilight, the white nights all hold the promise of youth, of love, of eternal renewal. The war has not yet touched this city of fallen grandeur or the lives of two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanova, who share a single room in a cramped apartment with their brother and parents. Their world is turned upside down when Hitler's armies attack Russia and begin their unstoppable blitz to Leningrad.

Yet there is light in the darkness. Tatiana meets Alexander, a brave young officer in the Red Army. Strong and self-confident yet guarding a mysterious and troubled past, he is drawn to Tatiana - and she to him. Starvation, desperation, and fear soon grip their city during the terrible winter of the merciless German siege. Tatiana and Alexander's impossible love threatens to tear the Metanova family apart and expose the dangerous secret Alexander so carefully protects - a secret as devastating as the war itself - as the lovers are swept up in the brutal tides that will change the world and their lives forever.

Outstanding.

I enjoyed every moment of this book. It was filled with kindness and goodness, love and warmth, sacrifice, valor, and courage, all during WW2.

Tatiana

I almost stopped listening to this book on two occasions. The main female character, Tatiana, was annoying and voluntarily chooses to suffer in order to endure additional emotional discord. It is no wonder Alexander was progressively getting angry. I know I was.

An Epic Love Story

I 'm not usually a fan of tales of romance, but this novel is much more than that. Set during Hitler's invasion of Russia and the siege of Leningrad, this is heartwrenching tale of the persistence of love in the midst of great suffering and the struggle to survive against almost insurmountable odds.

Russia's inhumanity

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audiobook to a friend. This story has history, action, intrigue, true love, and the narrator did an excellent job reading. I have a hard time listening to women narrators, so I pick stories that have male narrators, Not all male narrators I like, just fyi.

What other book might you compare The Bronze Horseman to and why?

I would compare The Bronze Horseman to Diana Gabaldon's book Outlander.

What about James Langton’s performance did you like?

I loved James Langton's performance. The voices that James uses made me think I was actually listening to the other characters in the book. I hope he narrates the other books in The Bronze Horseman series. I also love to listen to Steve West. I have listened to this book at least 5 times already.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed and cried. Oh and I did a lot of yelling!! Very intense!!

Any additional comments?

Please do the other Bronze Horseman books in Audible!!! Please!!!!!!!!!

2nd best book of all time!

If you could sum up The Bronze Horseman in three words, what would they be?

Breathtaking love story and more!

What other book might you compare The Bronze Horseman to and why?

Outlander because both are against all odds, timeless, love stories. Well written. Author makes you feel the story and love the characters.

Have you listened to any of James Langton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to James Langton's other performances but I thought he did a wonderful job on this.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It is a long audio book but I did get through it in a week.

Any additional comments?

Could not recommend this book more. I am disappointed that books 2 and 3 are not available from audible. I have to finish the series!

Dull

I didn't like Alexander. The author tried to explain the reasons behind his actions but I continued to think of him as dishonest , selfish and an idiot.

True Love

I almost turned off this book and returned it. I wasn’t that far into it, so I thought I’d give it a little while longer!! That would’ve been one of the worst mistakes of my life!! What an amazing story about true love!! And then the guy that performed it, so good!! Love love love all the voices!! Truly amazing!!! I quickly went onto the remaining books!! Won’t regret listening to this one, I swear it!!!
