About this listen

They were orphans, Chris and Saul - raised in a Philadelphia school for boys, bonded by friendship, and devoted to a mysterious man called Eliot.

He visited them and brought them candy.

He treated them like sons.

He trained them to be assassins.

Now he is trying desperately to have them killed.

Spanning the globe, here is an astonishing novel of fierce loyalty and violent betrayal, of murders planned and coolly executed, of revenge bitterly, urgently desired.

Strong story, a tad long

Worth a credit. Warning: the book is more than 20 years old and feels a bit dated.

I prefer single readers to casts, but the story itself is strong and held my attention most of the way. I did feel, however, that it began to grow a bit predictable and I was ready for the story to wind up about 45 minutes before it actually did.

I did not find the reading too clipped or fast. I'll read more Morrell after this one.

Good novel with bad narration

BROTHERHOOD OF THE ROSE, Book 1 in David Morrell's Mortalis espionage series, was first released in 1984 and set at that time. It is a 5 star novel ruined by Morrell's own horrid narration. David Morrell is a giant of the mystery/thriller genre. I believe I'll listen to his First Blood soon. That is his 1972 first novel that introduced John Rambo who was made famous by the Rambo movies. Eric G. Dove narrates the First Blood/Rambo series so I can be confident of first rate narration.

I seldom reduce overall ratings based on bad narration but in this case the narration is so horrid that a major down rating is justified.

I loved this when I read it, loved it as an audible.

This series of books needs to be a movie. Takes place in the 80’s but is still relevant now.

Koontz does a great job with mastery of intrigue

Highly recommended read antiquated technology but very well written considering when the book was written. Excellently worded and very interesting to the reader 5 stars and well deserved. David Nicholas Copeland Senior from the great state of Texas.

Great book, choppy reading

I'm a big fan or Morrell and I loved this book, but the production on this audio version is pretty sub-par. The narrator's voice goes really fast, as if the speed on the tape was increased. This makes it difficult to understand some of the words and the listener can end up confused on some character and plot points simply because it goes too fast to process.

Poor recording

Choppy audio. The recording was done with different people reading each character but when it’s played it seems like the speed is different for each person. Kinda distracting. Get it from Libby, this recording is not worth a credit.

Excellent narrator

Great at different voices for each character in the book. I could identify each character from voice alone. I will probably listen to this again some day.

narrator

The story is great unfortunately the narration was horrible, it was read WAY TOO FAST! sometimes difficult to understand. David Morrell can write but should leave the reading to a professional.
