About this listen

The Burgess Bird Book for Children introduces children to the fascinating subject of bird life in storybook fashion. Thornton Burgess uses Peter Rabbit as a means for younger children to learn about birds in the Green Forest and Green Meadows. On the journey through the book, Peter learns a great deal from sassy Jenny Wren and other neighbors.

Listeners learn about common birds' physical appearance, eating, nesting habits, and songs and calls. The author notes that he wrote this book to supply a definite need - to prepare a volume for those who, at the time, felt a lack of satisfactory medium to introduce bird life to little children.

Thornton W. Burgess was a conservationist and author of children's stories. He loved the beauty of nature and its living creatures so much that he wrote about them for 50 years. By the time he retired, he had written over 170 books and 15,000 stories for a daily newspaper column.

Great book, needs a different narrator

So disappointed. My kids listen to the Thornton Burgess books over and over and I would love for them to hear this one. My kids are pretty easy going about narration but this one is just too hard to listen to. Pauses in all the wrong places, my kids asked me to return it, which basically never happens. Audible, please rerecord this charming book! For now, I've returned it.

Wonderful

This has been a companion to my kids and I for 3 or 4 years. We have enjoyed listening slowly as we have watercolour painted the birds found within and become familiar with the feathered friends out our window and on our farm.

Warning: Sample the narration before purchasing

Narration is a complete bust. It literally sounds like a computer is reading the book

Narrator hard to listen to

We really wanted to love these stories and probably would with a different narrator but this narrator is hard to listen to. His reading cadence is unusual and it makes it hard to follow the story. We gave up and did not finish the book. I hope Audible will add another version of this book and the Burgess Animal Book for Children book with a different narrator.
