About this listen

Often called the "Father of Church History", Eusebius was the first to trace the rise of Christianity during its crucial first three centuries from Christ to Constantine. Our principal resource for earliest Chrisitianity, The Church History presents a panorama of apostles, church fathers, emperors, bishops, heroes, heretics, confessors, and martyrs.

This audiobook edition includes Paul L. Maier's clear and precise translation, historical commentary on each book in The Church History, and numerous maps, illustrations, and photographs. These features promise to liberate Eusebius from previous outdated and stilted works, creating a new standard primary resource for listeners interested in the early history of Christianity.

The reader is great! But the format makes it difficult to determine if he is reading Eusebius, or commentary by Maier. There’s no heading (e.g “Footnote:…”) and sometimes no break at Al between notes and the text. The extremely long quotes Eusebius uses are difficult enough to keep up with. You get used to it, and can figure it out by the tone of the language, but I was pretty lost for the first third of the book there.

Great, Difficult to follow in audio.

This book was educational, fascinating and inspiring. I will recommend this book to every Christian I know.

I don’t know if the translation is better or worse than others, however, this book gives a huge insight into the beginnings of Christianity. It’s a book that must be listened to more than once. For me, listening to this book was revelatory.

This was quite well written and presented. As other reviewers have said, it's hard to distinguish the text from the footnotes. Otherwise, the author's commentary was quite useful in a translation that was very approachable. The author provides some good sceptical criticism of some of Eusebius' writings, but seems to forget that when he describes Eusebius overall as being very accurate and a good historian. Eusebius was far from a good historian but I'm thankful that what he wrote was at least preserved.

The narrator had a good voice for this, but his pronunciation of foreign and theological words was often poor.

Reading this vivid and horrid description of Christian persecution makes one truly appreciate the great religious freedom we have today. Reading this book helps to increase faith and trust in the Lord. Constantine saved millions of Christians from horrible torture over many centuries, but Christian hostility seems to be growing rapidly today.

Great listen. The pdf that was attached also helped with the visualization of the book. Thank you

Details of executions and tortures tell it all until the dawn of Constantine’s reign. The commentary is very helpful as well as the appendix for authenticating the type of historian Eusebius was and how his work survived due to his sometimes criticized praise of Constantine which in turn finally allowed Christianity to flourish.

The content is solid (if you can handle a modern editor cutting out what he considered redundancies or undue embellishments) but listen carefully, because the editor's critical commentary is rather often inserted during the reading, and always without due verbal notice.

Listening again. The early history of the Church of Jesus Christ is awe inspiring and sensational.

While the material is dry, and the narrator does not differentiate well between quotes of Eusebius and commentaries by the author, this is still a worthy primer on church history.

A convenient primer.
