Publisher's summary

In a weedy lot on the outskirts of Memphis, two boys watch a shiny Lincoln pull up to the curb....

Eleven-year-old Mark Sway and his younger brother were sharing a forbidden cigarette when a chance encounter with a suicidal lawyer left Mark knowing a bloody and explosive secret: the whereabouts of the most sought-after dead body in America.

Now Mark is caught between a legal system gone mad and a mob killer desperate to cover up his crime. And his only ally is a woman named Reggie Love, who has been a lawyer for all of four years. Prosecutors are willing to break all the rules to make Mark talk. The mob will stop at nothing to keep him quiet.

And Reggie will do anything to protect her client - even take a last, desperate gamble that could win Mark his freedom...or cost them both their lives.

Featured Article: The Essential John Grisham in Audio

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. To help you decide which Grisham gem to download next, we’ve compiled a list of the very best.

Man's voice needed here

Story would have been better read by a man since most of the characters were men. I found myself wishing I had just read it in print. But good plot. Not a waste of time for sure.

Fine narrator, diverting, warm hearted story. Nice characters, ok for older teenagers, try the film.

An absolutely perfect story in all aspects

This has to be one of Mr Grisham’s top 5 stories. Added to that is a remarkable narration. This story has all the elements of great fiction. Good triumphs over evil. The little person out wits the powerful. Unforeseen twists in the plot. A plot that is just enough over-the-top to keep you spellbound. Yet, it could be plausible. Last, the narrator has the voices down perfect, including a very convincing Southern drawl. I’ve listed to this story maybe 50 times since it came out as a cassette recording. I’ll probably listen to it another 50. The storyline is timeless.

Good story but horrible performance

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, there is too much loud background music. It was so loud at times that I could not hear the narrator.

Speaking of the narrator, this is the first time I've listened to a female narrator. It didn't work. A man can use his falsetto to sound like a female character, but woman can't lower her voice. The main character was an 11 year old boy, so her voice worked for him, but it didn't work for any of the male characters. I often times could not tell who was talking or what sex they were.

What did you like best about this story?

It was a good suspense story. Reading the book would have been better than listening to this recording.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

With a female voice, I could never understand if a man was talking or a woman was talking.

Was The Client worth the listening time?

No

Any additional comments?

I'd redo the book. Get rid of that annoying background music, and use a male narrator.

Great book.

Great book but the music is simply annoying and distracts from an otherwise great audiobook.

Interesting legal twist...

The book was good because it dealt with legal issues related to children. The laws vary and the role of attorneys and judges has to change. I like that the young man was clever. And my only negative is at the ending was drawn out too long....and and the open-ended question about whether the bad guys were going to get to the body before the plane left!

Easily Made Into a Movie

Any additional comments?

This book could obviously be made into a movie. A ton of pointless details, a ton. Although the best courtroom scenes in this book were somehow the ones that they left out of the movie.
