About this listen

New York Times best-selling author R. A. Salvatore takes listeners back to his signature world of Corona, introducing a fascinating new hero. It is God's year 54, many years before the Demon Wars, in the land of Corona. The roads are unsafe to travel; goblins and bloodthirsty Powries search out human prey. Two religions struggle fiercely for control. Bran Dynard, a monk of the fledgling religion of Abelle, returns from his mission in a far-off land with a book of mystical knowledge and a beautiful and mysterious new wife. But he soon realizes that the world he left behind has changed, and his dream of spreading the wisdom he learned to his fellow monks is crushed.

Forced to hide his wife and his precious book, Bran must decide whom he can trust and where he should now place his faith. Twenty years later, the situation has grown darker and more desperate. Only the Highwayman travels freely, his sword casting aside both Powries and soldiers. The people need a savior, but is the Highwayman on a mission of mercy... or vengeance?

The story is slow and winding but good. It delivers the origin and background of the main protagonist very well.

Fantastic narrator

I really enjoyed this book. The story line was great and the characters and action lived up to the storyline. The narration was very good. Others I've heard have been better with voices but this narrator was very clear and easy to listen to and understand. I will recommend this book to others.

good read

Having read "Child of a Mad God", I was wanting more of this world. The Highwayman introduces the reader to the world of Corona, and it's struggles with battling religions. A hard place to live in, and even harder for a young boy born with physical disabilities. This is the story of Bransen Garibond, an orphaned cripple, growing up among hateful prejudices, overcoming all obstacles, with the help of a book left to him by his parents. Wonderfully written with excellent narration by Tim Gerard Reynolds, this story is well worth the time.

A good look at humankind

One of my favs

Every story doesn’t need to be a trilogy. This is one such story. Welll written by R.A. Salvatore and masterfully performed by Tim Gerard Reynolds, one of my favorite narrators, this story was far more interesting than I expected.

It’s based in his own world and not Forgotten Realms, so you will immediately see the difference in the setting. However, his writing style still lends to heroic characters in a fantasy setting. His villains are complex, some wholly horrible while others seemingly redeemable if placed in the right light.

The book does a lot of self reflection of the primary characters, though that is partly how the story progresses. In the end, however, Mr. Salvatore ties everything up quite neatly, and leaves room for a second book. However, I don’t see that as being needed.

Some story are just really good one offs.

An enjoyable one off!

A book casting into words and analogy of humanities’ sins being steadfastly triumphed over by The Highway.

R.A. Salvator. Your work from the Companions of the Hall and of The Highway have left a lasting impression. Thank you for all the years of insight and adventure. I wish to meet you one day.

A story of love, kindness, & adventure.
