About this listen

The toppling of the US Administration by “The Organization” in 2069, left the citizens of New York in a state of shock and helplessness.

Maya, a devoted history major, had to quit her studies and divide her time between working at a bar owned by her father and a local florist. The sense of fear surrounding the new reality takes on an authentic meaning when a mysterious suitor persistently courts her.

As Maya moves between circles of frustration, anger, and lack of trust, she is unaware that she is ultimately being used as the main tool in the battle to overthrow "The Organization." Maya's new reality causes her to wonder; does giving a hand to another always involve one's own personal interest? Can one's conscience have alternate meanings within different generations? Will Maya's love survive alongside existential fear?

The Conscience is a spellbinding journey into a future that seems to have been drawn straight from the pages of a history book.

Critic reviews

"In Davis’ dystopian romance, twists of fate draw a workaday woman into mysterious relationships and a revolutionary plot against a brutal dictator. At the outset of this debut novel, a murderous dictator has risen to power in the United States through a military coup. Several of his conscripts have become regulars at the bar where the narrator, Maya, works. Among them, a handsome but domineering soldier named Billy begins to pursue Maya; Billy’s cronies pressure her with vague threats and hints of technically legal, disturbing surveillance. But soon she meets Mike, a suave doctor working against the status quo, and she succumbs to his charm despite Billy’s threats and her friends’ warnings. The couple survives the thugs’ intimidations, but just as Maya’s love for Mike overwhelms her, a kidnapper abducts her at a subway station. Maya is distraught, but slowly her somehow familiar captor, Adam, proceeds to define a role for her in a convoluted plot involving the dictator and a strange prophecy." (Kirkus Indie Reviews)

The perfect read!

The perfect read for a first-time audible user!
I was skeptical at first since I love the reading experience and how my own imagination of characters and their voices fit perfectly in my head. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The audio amplified the experience and even made it personal, and sometimes, it seemed like I was listening to a best friend telling her own story.
In addition to the captivating storyline, the references to history and the remainder of the possible danger of repeating it force the reader to think a little deeper and pay attention to current events around us. This book has it all: romance, heroism, dilemmas, history, future, philosophy, and the constant contrast between joy and grief and how, eventually, one cannot be without the other.
I highly recommend it!
