About this listen

To live in a world of shadows and ash is to know a horrific existence. One of Pain, blood, and sickness.

Gods have turned a deaf ear to the suffering and prayers of the devout. In response, worshippers have turned to Darker Gods, who demand tithe in the form of blood, pain, and souls.

Many see the war between the Necromancers and the Mages as the cause of the world’s woes. A war that devastated the land, in which things were created and things done that never should have been.

Talian’s life lies in shatters from an event from the past. Instead of wallowing in the bitterness it caused, he is using the tragedy to stoke the cold flames of wrath that burn in his soul to save the world.

Father Randall, on the other hand, sees himself as a victim of a tyrannical king and powerful clergy.

Slynne, Goddess of Pain, has come to Father Randall in his darkest hour, whispering words of blood, pain, and revenge.

One seeks to save everyone.

The other seeks to ease his wounded soul with the blood and suffering of others.

Who will succeed?

I liked the story but the grammar/language was repetitive and the narrator doesn't fit the book well. The characters should have vastly different voices, but this guy doesn't have the range to lend those voices correctly.

decent story, subpar narration

I have not reached for this genre in the past so this is my first one. My interest and imagination was captured from beginning to end, I believe, due to the performance of the narrator. I will look forward to future offerings from both the author and the narrator.

This isn't my normal listen. At first, I was bit annoyed by the loud narration, but after a while I actually really appreciated the narrator and his very strong presence. It was honestly the narrator that kept me listening all the way to the end, since you really don't understand what the plot is or where the characters are going until like chapter 20-something, Luckily, some of the chapters were only a few minutes long so it went by pretty fast. By the end I enjoyed the book overall, but it took me quite a while to finish listening to this book. I think I'm just not the target audience for stories that read like a dungeon master is explaining what is happening in a Dungeon's and Dragon's campaign. Don't get me wrong I enjoy D&D, but it isn't my preference for books. I do suggest giving the book a try just for the narration, and if you like that sort of book adventure.
