Publisher's summary

An immersive and ambitious new series from the Aurealis Award-winning author of A Crucible of Souls.

A corrupted power stirs from beyond the grave.
A sacred order of knights sworn to protect the world from evil.
The Necromancer Queen will rise again.

Seventeen years have passed since the Necromancer Queen Talia was overthrown and slain, and her capital city destroyed by the Knights of the Order of Eternal Vigilance.

Anskar DeVantte, raised in the sacred disciplines of the Order, is now ready to face the brutal initiation trials to become a consecrated knight-sorcerer.

But the further Anskar rises in the ranks the more his faith wavers, and he is beset by harrowing dreams and uncertainty. As troubling powers awaken within him, a schism grows between Anskar and his hallowed Order, and he draws the hungry gaze of the vanquished queen’s fanatical followers.

As Anskar pieces together the mysteries of his early life, and begins to understand the malevolent forces gathering in his path, he finds himself with a crucial choice to make: Remain loyal to the Order’s righteous mission, or control the dark powers growing within him.

Either way, his destiny is steeped in war. The only question is, which side will he be on?

Oh… the same world as Niklaus!

This book was great! And it’s been such a long time since I read Mitchel Hogan’s series with Niklaus fighting demons, I didn’t realize it’s earlier in the same world. Can’t wait to read the rest of the story and see how the Goddess arises!

He did it again

Another story that sucked you in and made feel for the characters, then having you get emotional about their situation. Now I am impatiently waiting for the next book.

Worth a credit

As far as "coming of age" fantasy tropes go, this book is a good rendition. An excellent take on the phrase "the road to hell is paved in good intentions."

I normally don't enjoy books that invest so much into theology but witnessing the existential crisis developing in our protagonist keeps me engaged.

On to book 2!

Worst Maps of Any Fantasy Series

Decent story. Decent writing. Excellent narration. Worst maps of any fantasy series I've ever read or listened to.

Great book

The narrator is one of my favorites, therefore I think his performance war exceptional. And the story is well put together and good at keeping your attention fixed. I’d happily continue the series but my app is glitching out and won’t let me download the next book.

The main character has no understanding of religion

The worst part of this book/series is Anskars complete lack of understanding of what religion is meant to be it’s supposed to set guiding principles for which u strive for to be the best person u can be but the gods or people who made the religion know humans are not perfect and will inevitably stray that’s why there are confessions so u can speak ur wrongs and strive to be better but for some reason he refuses to believe this and thinks everyone rotten and evil

very good beginning!!!

Good book #1. A bit predictable. To me, The author(Mitchell Hogan) creates very imaginative world with likeable characters. This is a third series that I have read and I do like his stories.

Great beginning to a new series

I am actually NOT a fan of this narrator. I know he does many epic fantasy but I just am not a fan. That being said I did get into this story and I am eagerly awaiting the next one.
